Can anyone tell me if this allows you to access fonts ect even if you dont have the cartridge? Can you get fonts offline with this or is it limited to the cartridges you have?

No, it's strictly for cartridges and what's on them.

You're thinking of Sure-Cuts-A-Lot which voids your warrant but allows you to use any font on your computer.

Why does it void your warranty and has anyone used this? Is it worth it or does anyone recommned something similar thats better wouldnt necessarily need to be for the cricuit?

It's not produced by Cricut or their manufacturer. Anything used on the Cricut that's not theirs voids the warranty. Many wait until their year is up.

Technically, refreshing mats can void warranties.

I have SCAL, and I LOVE it now that I've really started to use it for myself and not just for my DH's projects.

DS allows you to see all of the images on all of the cartridges, but you can only cut what you have cartridges for.

SCAL... I find *.svg files online that I use, along with using fonts on my computer and converting images I want to use.

I waited for my 1-year to be over before I purchased SCAL, but for $75 I can get countless images and fonts, and I use my cricut more now.

So if Im reading right here. It doesnt help out much unless you have cartridges. So for ex. if I want to get the tinkerbell, its not going to help unless I buy the disney tinkerbell cartridge? I dont know much about Cricuit Design Studio so pardon me if this seems like a dumb question.

Yep, Lydia. You have to have cartridges to use those particular shapes/letters with Design Studio.

Weld letters and shapes together, place things exactly where you want on the mat, see what's all on a cartridge without the booklets... I don't have the software but been learning about so I may have missed other issues.

it also allows you to cut X2, X3, and X4 over the exact same area (design) without removing the mat. I just read about this in the manual - i have not tried it yet!

Yea, Viv, you can.

Also, you can manipulate the images to create others. I've seen people make Sesame Street characters, states, and the like out of just the George/Basic Shapes cartridge (before those carts were available). You can get real creative with CDS, if you have the patience.

No, you don't need DS to use SCAL. SCAL is made for Cricuts and on PCs or MACs with MS platforms.

However, you do need to download the TRIAL version of CDS just because CDS will update your cricut when you connect the cricut to your computer (just takes a minute or two).

Thanks! Also do you need a special cord to attach it to your computer? Can you buy them anywhere?

If you purchase CDS, then it comes with the cord.

If you purchase SCAL, then you need to purchase/obtain a standard USB cord, like one you'd use to connect a printer or an external harddrive to your computer.
