Anyone else scrapbook the old fashioned way?

Hate that expression but not sure how to say it. I've been sbing on and off for about 12 years. I cannot get into the newer style of sbing, using one tiny picture with tons of random layers sticking out underneath it. I can admire some of the layouts I've seen but it's just not my style. I use at least 2 regular size 4x6 pics on each page, some pp that coordinates with the pictures,. And some embellishments. I never got into the big fads of sbing and pretty much always focus on my pictures...they are the star of my page. Scrapbooking can be whatever you want it to be and I like looking at the different styles. I just wonder if anyone else still sbs like I do?

I'm with you. I love looking at the different styles and they look so nice to me but I like to use a lot of photos and there usually isn't much room to get very fancy.

I also use larger or many photos and focus on the photos. I think it's a matter of your goal. We take hundreds of photos on vacations, many are nature photos and I like to print them at least 4x6. There's no rules, you do what works for you.

I do a bit off both, I guess.
My boys albums are very much about the photos and story, minimal embellishment etc. And, I doubt that they will ever care about the embellishments, trends, lastest products etc. But I do believe that in years to come, they will sit down with their children and grandchildren and read the stories and share what their childhood was all about. They appreciate their albums now, so I hope they will in the future too!

But my album is where I like to "play" sometimes and try out new things, load up the embellishments and techniques. It's just for me and it works for me

But I often think back to 14 years ago when I started, that it was somehow easier then and I did get more done. Sometimes I get a bit lost in the feeling that I have too many choices in my stash and too many ideas to explore from all the wonderful inspiration in the gallery.

I am with you I think a page should be all about the photo and not about how much of your stash you can use on one page. Remember less is more. I would love to see some of your layouts how about sharing some with us.

Please keep in mind that many of these women are on design teams and have committed to their prospective companies they will show case the PRODUCTS. Also remember, this is a retail website. You may not see much old fashioned scrapping. With all of this in mind, there are still many old school scrappers here. I was taught to tell my story. I tell it many different ways. I do a lot of everything. I want to grow in my craft and learn new, creative ways to tell the stories presented by the photos. To each his own. Enjoy your scrapping!

I am all over the place, depends on the photos, occasion and story. I rarely include more than 3 pictures and love the single photo pages. Recently, I have used divided page protectors to include photos that were not scrapped but descriptive of the subject I did scrap.

Well they might be 'random layers' to you but to other people they're the art they've created Not everyone scraps for the same reasons and for some of us it's more of a creative outlet than the whole 'telling the facts of the story' thing. I came to scrapping when my girls were about 8 and 10 years old....I was NEVER going to be 'caught up' so I scrapped the pictures I particularly liked, for fun, to please my eye, (and yes, often just one 'darned weenie tiny photo that actually came from my DSLR camera but was re-sized on my computer because I like that look) on a page, and not to document their lives.

I like some of the "minimalist" LOs and some of the major detailed LOs but they wouldn't do for me. I take too many photos. Each and every one is important to me. If I could, it would save me lots of money printing out ALL my photos.

Sometimes if you really look at them...you can find a cool technique or an accent you might want to try or use. Just a thought.

I have done both, and I like styles either way getting inspiration from both. Even though today, I put only 1 pic on most of my layouts and do put lots of other 'stuff' on that, I still feel that the focus of my layout is the picture. All the extra stuff is some representation of what the picture makes me feel, what was behind the story the picture was telling or something to draw out some element of the picture. It may not mean anything to everyone but to those involved it tells a story in itself.

I scrapbook in a more traditional way, but I do love adding 3D embellishments and Elements of texture to my pages. I do not do Project Life and have no plans to start. I spend way more on my pages then a typical PL page would cost me. So, maybe I have it wrong!

I do scrap with lots of pictures, some with 1 large picture on a page and some pages with several 4 x 6s. Its whatever strikes my fancy. I don't lock myself into styles or whats HOT, though I do love learning new techniques. If I like it then I try it. I go with the flow of my creative and I just do what makes me happy. I don't feel answering a question honestly jeopardizes a company's existence, since I am a loyal shopper here. I feel appreciated by Scrapbook.com and I also appreciate them for being here.

But, every new style thrown out there I am not going to gravitate too and want to try. Its okay for people not to follow the crowd or fads. Scrapbook companies just want you to buy the products and be loyal repeat customers: I've got that covered in spades!

I like both.

The album I'm working on now is old-fashioned, because it's quicker and the photos need to take centre stage.

I have often wondered that myself. I tried to do pages like that and just couldn't. Maybe it is because I have so many pictures to do and need to get 2 or three on a page. And I agree with bonrof who said:

The main reason I come here is to be loved and accepted. Who really care in the long run what kind of scrapper I am. I have so many friends here; so grateful for the great friendships.

I scrap however I feel like scrapping at the moment...and for whatever reason. Sometimes I like to try new (to me) styles or techniques, sometimes I like to see just how many pics I can get on a page, sometimes I just do whatever happens on the page. Sometimes I have one little pic on the page and what may seem like layers of random stuff piled on, but each item may have a lot of meaning to me and relates (to me) very directly and importantly with the pic. For instance, one of my sons loves the color green, so even if it's a snow pic, I may have lots of green, and maybe hearts for the love I have for him, and maybe music notes because he likes music, etc., etc. Also, I may have just one little pic on a page, because I have no other pics that relate to that pic or the page I'm wanting to do of that pic. It's all just personal preference, so don't worry if what you do isn't like "most" poeple or even "some" people. I love looking at all kinds of pages here..whether I think I can do it or not.

Since I scrap mostly trips, if I did one photo at a time, it would take forever so I scrap mostly 2 page layouts with a ton of photos.

I scrapbook a little of both. I have always considered myself a "traditional paper scrapbooker" but I do sometimes get messy or use a tiny photo, these days pocket pages are slowly creeping into my style too.

One of the best things about this hobby is that you can, scrapbook, go digital, project life, art journal or anything in between and it is not wrong, it is a very personal hobby and subjective to what you think "scrapbooking" is.

Well said Caz. Live and let live. I don't even care for the term "old-fashioned"....it's whatever you prefer to do, and don't worry about what others think. It's my hobby to do how I please, without judgement from anyone else. I'd prefer to just say we all have our own style. If you enjoy it, and it makes you happy, then it's "in style" I do like to have a story that goes with my photos, but if not, then just words and art. That's fine for me That said, I love to "make it pretty", which is also subjective.

Southgirl, the Big Shot gives me more options for designing a page! But the dies are a little costly. I get one once a month.

I just scolled through about 20 pages of the recently uploaded gallery and I saw more than half of the LO's are what I thought were considered the more traditional style of simple scrapbooking.
Please define "old fashioned" scrapbooking. I am not sure If I know what that means. How old are we talking? 50 years ago, scrapbooking was often literally collages of scraps saved from events or places. 15 years ago designer scrapbooking became more popular with themed papers and fancy sizzors. Now there are so many styles of scrapbooking I don't think I could describe each one.

notanavgblond, I consider old fashioned anything older than me!!

I'm working with some of my moms old photos that were taken out of an "old fashion" scrapbook, black paper with corner tabs holding them in, or in the case of my moms they were glued in. The album was probably from the 40's maybe late 30's but I doubt mom had the money to spend on photo albums in the 30's. There could have been a little writing along side the pictures but for certain there was no journaling that gave much information.
Anyway, I am trying to get them back in a scrapbook with a few stories/memories to go with them. I will be using the pocket pages for most of her pictures because it will be easier for her to view without all the distraction of embellishments. PLUS, I will never get done with all MY photos unless I find an easier way of scrapping some of the older ones.

Thank heavens there are more ways to scrap than we can do or want to do! I love looking at them all!

I've been scrapping for over 10 years and I think my style has changed a lot over the years. Mostly because I get bored doing the same old stuff all the time. I really enjoy trying out all the new techniques and ideas that people come up with and even trying to think up some of my own. I think that's why I like this site so much. It has really helped me to think outside the box and try new things. If it's possible, I will try it all.

I don't mean to criticize the way anyone scraps .. We all do it for our own reasons and in our own way. What I was looking for in my post was to see if others still sbed the way I did so I could get some inspiration. I sb strictly to preserve the memories but also for the fun. I'm just not particularly artsy. I wouldn't say I sb in creative memories style at all..I never really did. I guess I still sb the same as I did in say 2008 or so.I use 4x6 or sometimes bigger pics. I usually use at least a couple pics per page. I love patterned paper and embellishments. I just use them in a different way than what a lot of the current scrapbookers do, if that makes sense. Nothing against those that sb that way , I was just looking for those that scrap in a similar fashion if anyone else still does. I also use some packet pages along with my 12x12 layouts because I have so many pics.

Rnruns, it's hard to say if anyone scraps the way you do without seeing any of your layouts. If you would upload a few into your gallery, it would be easier to see what you're describing.
I agree with some of the others, there is no "right" or "wrong" way to scrap. It depends on your taste, reason for scrapping and in a way the subject matter. My hubs and I have never been dedicated picture takers, we tend to be really random. I'm sure we miss a lot of good photo ops, but since the only thing we usually take pics of is scenery on infrequent trips and our furbaby, that's okay with me. We don't have and are not going to have kids, it's just the two of us and our dog, my scrapbooks will die with me, so my main reason for scrapping is the creative outlet it gives me. It is a great way for me to turn off the work day and let loose my artistic side, it helps me relax and tune out the world, and I get to enjoy the pictures that we do take. I'm not creating a legacy, and that's perfectly fine with me.

Im one of those people doing both; legacy and creative outlet. I know my family loves my work, but I do want to improve and grow in my craft for me. On this website, I am following 120 people! Why? I want to learn from them. I don't want to be stagnant. Scrapping is a big stress reliever for me. I go in my scrap room and every problem goes on the shelf. What a gift!

I've been scrapbooking since 2004ish - Personally my style depends on how Im feeling at the moment!!

Perhaps a search in the gallery under either styles then clean and simple or by number or size of picture might yield you a better field of what you are looking for.

My opinion is the industry has progressed enough that there are variety of styles happening that they are all relevant.

When I started scrapping I really wanted to learn to make those fancy layouts. Then I learned and I was thinking: yippii!! I did it! But I then I looked back through the years and realized that I didn't really like those pages anymore. I prefer almost a Project Life style. I save my more artistic stuff now for my art journals and I keep my scrapbook layouts simple. I like it better that way. But to each his own :-)

I look back at old layouts and see how my style has evolved. I might not like some of the older layouts from a design or artistic view, but I enjoyed making them and the memories are priceless.
I am all over the map with my pages, but I'm sure if someone looked at my body of work there would be some common elements that make them mine, even when I'm trying something different (going off topic a bit:))

I have been scrapping since 2000 and I change what I do based on the subject, my mood, etc. I usually do a couple 4x6 photos on a page but I've been known to do one tiny photo as well. I tend to lots of journaling on most of my pages.

There are plenty of people who still scrap the way you do.

I like to put lots of pictures on my pages but with a design so it's pleasing to my eye.

I sometimes do one picture layouts.

I'm totally envious of some people who do the one picture layouts and have clusters that look amazing, and sometimes try to copy them, but I have my style, and I like it.

I tend to scrap with multiple 4x6 photos. I view my scrapbook layouts as old school but I do enjoy trying out new styles...I just tend to go back to what I am comfortable with. I love seeing what other people come up with but sometimes when a trend really catches on everything starts to look the same.

I got an Instamax camera for Christmas and it does the small Polaroid like pictures. Love them, but I use them to go along with my larger, multi photo layouts. I should journal more with my layouts, but I am good with my style.
