Obviously I'm doing something wrong. I first bought a Darice heat gun and within 3 weeks the plastic covering the heat source melted. A couple of days ago I returned it and picked up the Heidi Swapp brand heat gun. This morning I noticed the plastic start to melt. I'm new to all of this and I'm sure I'm probably using it improperly. I was prepping a page with clear gesso. I think I might be using the gun or laying it on the counter in a way that is damaging it. Please help?

It is an embossing tool. I never run mine more than a couple of minutes, and I let it rest at least that long.
For drying paints or adhesives I use a hair dryer I have in my studio.

I never place my heat gun on the counter while running, other wise it should be fine if laying down. I use a TH heat craft tool, never have a problem with melting the casing.

I definitely don't leave it running when I place it on the counter. The only reason I mentioned it is because I thought maybe putting it down like that (even though it's OFF) caused the metal to get too close to the plastic. I'm using it to dry gesso onto a bible page. I don't think I'm running it for more than 2 minutes at a time, since that's about how long it takes to dry. My daughter suggested that maybe because I use it at a slight tilt, that may be the cause of the melting. I'm going to try to remember to start using it straight down, with no tilt. Hopefully, that will fix the problem. If anyone else has some advice as to how to prevent this, I would greatly appreciate it.

I would try searching YouTube for videos on how to use this tool (I don't have one so can't help you), also a search on Google about "melting heat gun problem" may help.
