How do you punch a hole in the middle of your paper without folding it to put a flower or a button that has the brads. Is there a special tool to use?

There are several options a very long handled hole punch. This will give best results.

The next option is trickier. Use a Sharpe tool on a cutting pad and cut a small x then push the brad through the cut. If it needs to be rounder a knitting needle can round it out. Always remember to push from the face side and be very gentle paper can tear very easily using this technique but it's very good for card stock.

To stop creasing and reduce the risk of tearing a bit of florists foam or modeling clay underneath the paper helps. Because the needle will go onto the clay but the paper will stay put.

Okay, I am sure some may find this weird but it works great for me (I try to limit my tools). I use a carpet nail (very sharp!) I place a piece of cardboard (thick) on top of my cutting mat then the paper on the cardboard. Place the nail tip where I want my hole and give it a wack!Makes a great small hole. I have not used this for fabric though, I imagine it would tear the fabric.

If the hole has to be nice and round, use a hole punch. I have a Making Memories anywhere hole punch (I can't find them here at the superstore). There are similar tools at hardware stores. I have both shown below. I LOVE the MM hole punch.

I use the very pointy tip of my Cutter Bee scissors... it creases the page just a tiny bit, but it creates just enough of a hole that the brad will stay nice & tight.

I usually use my paper piercer to make a hole. If not I use my scraparatus to punch a hole. I love that you can punch and set eyelets anywhere with it.

That's why I buy cheap stuff from Harbor Freight. It works great for crafts and paper, but not sturdy enough for much else. Hubby wouldn't WANT them!

I have a cropadile big bite, which I love solely for that purpose. You can use a coupon and get them 40-50 percent off.

Barring that, I have found that the sharp end of a cheapo seam ripper (for sewing) works just fine. The sharp end is rounded (like a paper piercer) so it doesn't make a hole too large (which might happen using the end of scissors) and doesn't require buying a specific tool (paper piercer or big bite).

I think this is so funny how many people ONLY use their cropadiles as hole punches. I guess if you want to have a $45 hole punch!

My Crop O Dile is used very little anymore, mostly for cards or for chipboard or other hard to poke media.

I usually use an x-acto. But as for paper piercers/eyelet setters, my friend gave me a great one from ProvoCraft. No hammers or springies or any thing. And I even used it to pierce cardstock the other day. She bought it on ebay for around $10.

I poke it with a thumbtack and have just folded the brad and put a glue dot and voila, no fuss or muss.

I like the Martha Stewart screw punch. It comes with 3 different sizes and very simple to use. I bought it on clearance at Wall-E-World..would not pay full price for it.

I also have the big bite...and I like it too but use it mostly for eyelets!

My chosen technique is very simple and very cheap. I took the old ice pick from the kitchen junk drawer and added it to my scrap tools. When a hole is needed, I lay my paper, cardstock or whatever on a piece of scrap cardboard (just rip it from a shipping box that was headed for recycling anyway), make a light pencil mark and punch lightly with the ice pick. The shaft grows wider above the point, so if you want the hole a little larger, just slide the paper slowly up the shaft until the hole is the right size.

Except for the pretty handle, this is the same as the hollow punch set (which was less than $5 for 9 sizes at Harbor Freight vs. $24.99 for the Martha Stewart 3-size one!)

I would have to say the Big Bite is perfect for so many reasons. My dh bought mine at M's with a 50% off coupon. I love it. So easy to use, measurements clearly marked, lots of reach etc.big

I must say I love my bigbite. Prior to having that I used my making memories tool kit. The bigbite is sooooo much easier than tapping a hammer on the punch to make the hole.

I too bought mine iwth a 50% off coupon....what a deal!
