Stamps and matching dies...help

What are your suggestions for getting stamped images lined up well with matching dies? ( I have a Cuttlebug) I love the look of these kinds of sets but never get them lined up very well. Help....

Just a thought, are you stamping first or cutting first? All the videos I've seen have showing the stamping coming first, with no apparent problems lining up the die over it.

And don't forget that you can use tape (washi or paper tape that comes off easily) to keep your die in place on the paper so it cuts perfectly.

Some of my dies are "solid"... not just an outline. I have trouble putting the solid die in exactly the right place since I can't see any part of the stamp.

Hmm... what if you cut the shape first, then stamp - if the stamp isn't clear, you could turn it over and place the cut paper on top of it, and run a brayer or something over it (or just press down using a clear block to even out the pressure)?

side question: I've tried taping my dies for cutting - using basic masking tape - it comes off great from the paper, but it's not coming off from the soft cushion on the die! I've had it happen twice with my sizzix dies. anyone else had it happen too? is masking tape bad for this, or was it just my kind of masking tape that was bad?

Heartfelt Creations actually posted a fabulous video on YouTube about how to use their stamps and matching dies, but you could translate the process to any matching die and stamp set I would think.

I've only ever used clear Scotch tape, and though it sometimes sticks a bit I can always peel it off. Here's a question though - describe the foam on your Sizzix dies - is is smooth, almost like Fun Foam (all the newer dies, including every Sizzlit I've ever seen, has this type), or textured with a more rubbery feel (their older dies have this)? I find the tape comes off the former type MUCH more easily.

You can use the Blue painters tape found at most stores, That one peels off really easy. We used that at a card making workshop and it works.

Thanks for the tip about the blue painters tape. That makes a lot of sense but I never would have thought of it. Economical,too! A roll of that would last for years.

It doesn't help with big dies but for framelits the new magnetic platform from SU is awesome!!!

i guess the new type, since i've only purchased any dies in the last couple years. Tim Holtz thin dies - alphabet - are the ones giving me the pain. I don't want to run the entire page of letters, so I cut tiny pieces for the letters I need - and they go awol unless I tape 'em.
I'll try the scotch tape next time..

You could also try using a removable/repositionable tape instead of masking tape.

I don't have any of those sets...yet, but I do line dies up over printed journaling. I position it with painter's tape. So the suggestion of stamping first, then lining up the die and taping makes great sense. It should come out pretty perfect!

Now you made me want these!
