there's the ever-popular 'how many tp squares around the belly'
one i played at the last shower was gift bingo: everybody gets a blank card and they fill in some gifts they think might be given (booties, onesies, diaper bag, etc). then later, when the gifts are opened, whoever happens to get a bingo wins a prize!
also, a funny one is to take a piece of paper (on a hard surface) and put it on your head. then, with the hand not holding the paper, "draw" what you think the baby will look like. whichever one the mom-to-be thinks looks most like her baby-to-be (though, usually whichever resembles a human in the least!) wins.
We took the name of the dad and the name of the mom on a paper and gave the guests a certain amount of time to make other names from those names using each letter only once...person with the most names wins. Here is an example DAD: Ariel MOM: Marie new name Mariel It is nice because it may give the parents to be some name ideas.
Another is to buy jars of babyfood and try to get several in each color group......remove all labels. Number jars 1, 2 3, etc. and pass them around to each guest...as you do they have to look at it and name what it is on a list...person with most correct wins.
I did a game where we bought those little tiny naked babies and froze them in ice cubes in everyone's drinks...whoever's baby was "born" first (out of the ice cube) was the winner. I also saw a game where they cut little squares out of felt and folded them so they looked like a diaper and secured them with a safety pin. One of the diapers (or a couple, however you wanted to do it) had a little brown stain in the middle. The person with the "poopy" diaper won! OK, just one more. I saw a matching game where there were words from the birthing room, like doctor, umbilical cord, father, birth canal, etc. When someone found both of the words, they would win a candy prize that related. For example, the person who found both of the doctor words, got a butterfinger...the person who got the umbilical cord, a licorice rope, the person who got the father got a Big Hunk, and the person who got the birth canal got a milky way. Kind of graphic, but it was a hoot!
We played this game and it was HILARIOUS!
Everyone gets a safety pin or a clothes pin attached to their shirt.
They are not allowed to use the word baby!
If they use the word baby, they must give their pin to the person they said the word baby to.
The winner is the one with the most pins!
It's nice to have a prize for this game!
As you can imagine, some competitive people go around trying to make people say baby! It becomes really funny!
We always play the clothespin one that Wendy mentioned. It's hillarious how many times you say BABY.
Another funny is the grapefruit roll. You put a grapefruit in a pair of panty hose and tie the hose around your waste so the grapefruit is hanging in front of you. Then you take another grapefruit and place it on the floor. The person has to swing their grapefruit (rocking back and forth..no hands can be used) to hit the other one and the person that rolls it the farthest wins prize.
Another one is word scrammble. Make a list of words pertaining to babies to unscrammble. Have a time limit set.
I remember at my sister's shower, we did the baby item bingo, but also, the whole time, there was this giant pacifier necklace being passed around, so the person who Bingo'd and the pacifier person got a small prize.
Just remembered another really FUN one! Get about ten baby bottles and fill them up with water or coke or whatever. Pick out ten 'volunteers' to have a bottle drinking race - first one to finish wins!
Baby Songs Set a timer for 3 minutes. In that time have your guests, (individually or in teams) write down as many songs that have the word baby in the title. The person/team who has the most wins.
Baby Price is Right Hostess buys small baby items and keeps a list of what each item costs. Then makes a list of each item for every guest without the prices on the guest lists. Guests write what they think each item cost and total all items. Closest one to the correct cost wins.
Balloon Bust First, you need lots of balloons. On a sheet of paper write down some baby names, and only once write down the name you have chosen for your baby. After you blow the balloon up, stick the paper in the balloon and tie it. Place the balloons all over the area where you are having the shower. Each guest has to try and find the one balloon that has the chosen name in it, but the only way for them to find out what name is in there they have to bust the balloon by sitting on it. The one to find the chosen name is the winner. The guest can only do one balloon at a time.
Bath Towel memories Buy a large hooded bath towel for baby-white is best. Purchase non-toxic fabric paint or markers in baby colors (if sex of baby is known buy color specific paint/markers--i.e. pink for girl-blue for boy.) As each guest arrives have them "autograph" the towel with the paint or markers. Guests may want to even write a poem. At end of party present MOM with the towel.
Celebrity Babies Each guest is given a list of celebrity moms on the left, and a list of names on the right. Match the celebrity mom to the name of her baby/child. Ex: Madonna would by matched to Lourdes, using only the first or first and middle names, etc. Whomever matches the most correctly wins. Names of celebrity's children may be found online via different articles on many websites.
Clay Babies You will need about one can of dough for every two people. pass out the dough and have the players make little babies. the mother-to-be then judges and the winner gets a prize.
Diaper Sniffing You will need 10 or so diapers for this one. In each diaper put drops of different scents (vanilla extract, baby lotion, chocolate, root beer, etc). Give each guest a pen and paper and pass the little diapers around and have each guest sniff them and write down each scent. Whoever guesses the most correctly wins.
Door Prize Idea As each guest arrives, have them fill out an envelope with their name and address and place it in a basket. You can draw the names for your prizes and centerpieces. The envelopes go to the mom to be used for thank you notes.
Gifts for all You will need a couple of friends to help with this one. Go to a dollar store and buy dollar items such as soaps, candles, etc. Wrap in tissue and place in a basket. At the shower, when you are going to be opening your gifts, announce to your guests that a timer will go off every 7 minutes and whoever's gift you are opening at that time will be awarded a gift also. Have one friend set the timer every seven minutes and another friend walk around the room with the basket to reward the winners. Everyone pays attention and wants to win with less of an effort that is used then in BINGO.
Mommy Purse Game Have all ladies check purse for baby/children items, and the one having the most items win the prize.
Motherly Advise Upon arriving, each guest is given an index card and is to write a question a new mother would ask (example: How can I stop my baby from crying?) Then during the shower, these same cards are passed back out to the guests only face down so questions can not be seen by anyone. Guests are to write the answer to the question on the back that they placed on their card from the beginning.
Next Mom-To-Be Tradition says whoever brought the seventh gift opened at a baby shower will be the next to get pregnant. I made a badge with a picture of a pregnant woman and the caption "I'm Next!" for her to wear.
Perfect Baby Ask the guests the following questions – “According to the mother-to-be, her perfect baby would have …” For example, pretend the mother’s name is “Jane” and the father’s name is “John”. So one question would be: “Who’s eyes would the mother to be like the baby have : Jane’s or John’s.” The person who guesses the mother’s-to-be most perfect baby (the one with the most correct wins). Include Hair, Eyes, Skin, Lips, Hands, Feet, Calves, Personality, Sense of Humor, Intelligence, etc.
I got this from one of the neighbors here a little while ago. There's a "gestational period" game... get a list of animals, find out their gestation period (how long they're pregnant), and then make two columns. You have to match the gestational period to the right animal.
I havnt read the other games. But we played the dirty diaper game. Its hilarious. You melt 10 different kinds of chocolate candy bars in 10 different diapers. The people have to guess what type of candy bars they are. They only can smell them and look at them they cant eat them.
I made up a questionaire about the mother. I asked questions like "What was her favorite childhood character?", "Who was the second person she told about the pregnancy?", "Was she born to be a mother, or has she had to do some reading".
I also made up a game of television families. You would think that everyone could name the Brady kids, but a lot of people had trouble. And it's a little harder to come up with families to pick from, especially these days with the programming. But we had fun.
I also did fill in the blank nursery rhymes.
I didn't have a lot of space at the party, so I wanted things we could do sitting down. I put the baby food game by the food tables so they could look at it while they filled up their plates. Just be warned.... anyone who has recently feed babies does pretty well at that game.
I've played a game where there are 15 or so paper bags with different baby items in them. Using only your hands (no looking) you have to figure out what each one is.
I've also played another one where there's about 25 small drawings of different children's songs and you had to guess which song the picture was for.
One thing they did at my shower for my 2nd one was not really a game, but an activity. They asked each person to write a piece of parenting advice on an index card and then read the cards out loud while I was opening presents. My favorite one was from my older son, 5 at the time, whose advice was to "Let the baby and his brother eat as much candy as they want." LOL
**Pass the baby--Like Hot Potatoe used a baby doll and dressed it in the boy/girl clothes what ever the mommies having
**Drink Up--Fill a certain amount of bottles with a liquid and have a race to see who finishes first
**Feed the baby-Pair people up into a team of 2 and have one of them feed their partner a jar of baby food. Trick is to get really small spoons, I got mine from baskin robbins the smaple spoons. It's a lot of fun
These all are great ideas!! I forgot about the Dirty Diaper one...that is always a hoot!! Also, having the guest fill out the card at the entrance is great for the mom to write thank you cards as mentioned above.
wow yall listed some great games. I have a scramble game if you want the document.
My friend and i always do this (and I did it when I gave her a shower): Your gift to the mother can be a game. Fill a basket or a diaper bag with little items (You can get them at dollar stores) such as pacifiers, snack bowls, sippy cups, bottles, one diaper, picture frame, photo album (the mini ones), bib, baby wash clothes, rubber ducky, etc. until you have about 15-25 items in there. Then when you start the gift portion of the shower, give the mother the bag/basket as the first gift. She pulls out items one by one and names them. Then put it all back in the bag/basket and hide it. People write down as many items as they can remember. The one who has the most wins. If two people have same number, whoever was most detailed wins. I say they get a bonus point if they name the bag or basket!
I just thought of another that would be good and educational at the same time if I can find the stupid thing. I work for Healthy Start and we went to a coalition meeting and the Poison Control lady was there. She gave us a quiz that listed various scenarios and asked if you could handle this particular scenario at home or does the kid need to go to the hospital? For example: a 3 year old drinks 1/4 tsp of visine eye drops, can you handle this at home or should she go to the hospital? I'll let you guys guess the answer for a few posts! Whoever got the most right would win....believe me we are all parenting educators and we got a lot wrong! I want to find it and put it on the nsbr board.
You could also do a "What do you know?" test like the pretest/posttests we give our teenage mother group. It just asks questions like "t/f honey contains a bacteria that can be harmful or fatal to an infant under a year old if he ingests it?"
