It does sound good, I was totally teasing about the rotten fruit.

My brother works for the prison system and tells me some AWFUL things, I think deco scissors would be the least of my problems.

Just for you, Melissa, I'll have her make you some with rotten fruit. She did make some out of beets or something once - that was not so good. Tasted like bad communion wine or something.

I once watched LOCKUP marathon on TV for 9 hours straight, so I'm pretty much an expert on the prison system.

Holly you are very right about debating and it getting in between friendships. Totally not worth that!

And I can shed some light on the jailhounds' hooch: Most, if not all, prisons are required to provide fresh fruit to inmates every day. Having more than one piece of it in a cell per person is usually considered contraband for the reason that they may be collecting it to make hooch. They usually use apples and oranges. It used to be made from prunes which gives hooch its alternate name, pruno. The other key ingredient is bread. Its yeast ferments and turns to alcohol. Then they use sugar and sometimes ketchup in the mix. They use sheets and yes SOCKS lol to filter out the pulp. They let the mixture ferment in a knotted trash bag until it's nice and alcoholic. Depending on how it's made it can be pretty weak or quite intoxicating (like strong wine). White lightning on the other hand...well that stuff is less common but it "makes everclear look like kool-aid," as one prisoner said. It's a great way to destroy your liver.

Ok sorry for that...I am completely obsessed with prison documentaries, crime reality programs and documentaries, and drug documentaries. Can't get enough of it

Well, I ALREADY knew how to make the hooch! I didn't need LOCKUP for home-brewing/winemaking lessons, although it did help with my technique. But before you rush off for fresh rotten fruit from the dumpster behind your LGS (Local Grocery Store)-I DO ADVISE YOU: it does involve a bit more than just dirty socks. Those are really just there to provide a piquant top note to the bouquet. The real magic in in the toilet bowl in which you brew the hooch.

OMG I have nearly every Lockup episode recorded on my DVR. And I've seen every episode of Hard Time and Lockdown (A&E I think). Lockdown I watched episode after episode in one sitting on Netflix until it was over lol.

Thanks (I think) for the education on 'hooch.' I always thought it referred to any alochol --I didn't realize it was a particular thing...
I love how EDUCATIONAL my neighbors at sb.com can be.

A friend of ours is a Sheriff in a jail around here. He says the inmates that do kitchen duty steal bags of oranges all the time. One of these times I need to ask him how exactly they get them out without anyone knowing. I'm intrigued, but have never asked.

Oh yeah...sb.com package. Off to finish those gifts!
