This Old Marine
Lyrics by Jay Cox and Scott Moody

He was born in 1929, the year the market crashed
He got his first meals from bread lines, he had to grow up fast,
Then Pearl Harbor changed it all when he heard about the Marines,
On places like Guadalcanal and the Phillipines

When they raised the flag on Iwo Jima,
He said here's what this means,
When I grow up, I'm gonna be, A United States Marine...

A Marine to serve our country, a Marine to serve our Corps
A Marine to serve our people, a Marine to serve our Lord.

He retired after 21, packed his bags and moved away,
Living with his wife, he led a quiet life, four kids and a yard to play,
He's too old for Afghanistan , but still his heart is there,
When he hears troops are under fire, you know he'll always care.

His dress blues are still fitting, but they're a little tight,
He going to be buried in them, you know it's only right,
To be squared away when he passes away and walks through the pearly gates,
When it comes time for him to meet his appointed day,

He'll walk up to St. Peter, oh what a sight to see,
This old Marine is checking in, reporting for duty.
St. Pete will tell him, "come on in, 'cause we all need Marines,"
To guard the gate and keep us straight, looking on heaven's scene.

That flag on Iwo Jima, it means so much to me.
When I grow up, I'm gonna be, a United States Marine...
A Marine to serve our country, a Marine to serve our Corps
A Marine to serve our people, a Marine to serve our Lord.
