When Joe was 16 he wanted a Honda Del Sol. That is all I ever heard. He wanted it so badly and he pointed out everyone one on the road to me.
However, plans were derailed when he got his driver's license at 16 and was never allowed to use it because he came down with viral encephalitis the same week which left him with a grand mal seizure disorder. Driving or owning a car was out of the question.
For the next 5-10 years Joe was hopeful the meds would start controlling the seizures so he started saying, "When the seizures are controlled and I can drive I still want a Honda Del Sol."
After 10 years he kind of lost hope and realized he would never drive. Then whenever he saw a Honda Del Sol he would say, "If I could have driven, that is what I would have gotten."
It was so sad it just brought me to tears. You could just tell his hopes were dashed and he had faced that he would always rely on others for transportation. He withdraw socially because he didn't like being dependent on friends and other people to take him everywhere.
Then in January, 2013 his life completely changed when brain surgery put a stop to the seizures. The doctors told him there was no reason why he couldn't drive in July if the surgery did as well at they thought it would.
In March the doctors confirmed that he would be able to drive in July.
Later in March Bill was looking at car ads and called Joe and told him there was a Honda Del Sol for sale and asked Joe if he wanted to go look at it.
Of course he did!
He told Bill he really didn't have enough money for it and Bill told him they would talk about that after they saw the car. But, if he wanted it Bill would lend him the difference, they would work it out.
They came home with the car even though Bill had to take the test drive because Joe couldn't drive for 3 more months. The car had to sit in the driveway until July!
When they got home the owner followed them to our house to collect the money and transfer the title to Joe's name.
Joe told Bill he was going home to get his money although he didn't have enough.
Bill told him that he bought his kid's first cars, that I bought my oldest son's first car and even though Joe was 38 years old, this was his first car and it was a gift from the two of us. I had no idea that Bill was going to do that!
Whenever I couldn't find Joe I walked outside and he would be sitting in his car - just waiting for July. He cleaned and waxed the inside, the outside - even changed the stereo for one with a crisper sound that had blue teeth so he could talk on his phone hands free if he needed too. (He's not into loud boom music at all!)
I heard someone ask him one day why he didn't take the car for a ride - Bill and I were out of town so often we would never know. I was so proud of Joe's answer (he didn't know we were listening).
He said, "I could do that just about anytime I want to but the truth is I've waited 20 years for this. If I take the car out before July with the seizure history on my records and I get questioned by the police then I loose it all. After 20 years I'm not taking the risk to screw it up. I'll wait till July and clearance from my doctor."
