Im amazed by the number of times I have been asked if our sons twins are identical even when they know that one is a girl and the other is a boy. If youve ever wondered if twins are identical or fraternal, maybe I can help.

Twins happen when a pregnancy produces two babies this you probably already know. These babies can be identical, that is they are the result when one egg splits into two; or they can be fraternal meaning the babies developed from two different eggs.

Identical Twins can be two boys or two girls but never a boy and a girl. They usually look remarkably alike to the point that it is difficult, sometimes even for the parents, to tell them apart.

Fraternal twins can be two boys, two girls, or a boy and a girl. The genetic similarity between fraternal twins is the same as any two siblings with the same parents. They may look alike, or not, just like any sisters and brothers. Fraternal twins are the most common form of twins, representing about two-thirds of all twins born.
Our sons children all favor each other theres no denying they are siblings and Connor and Mackenzie favor each other the most. We were blessed doubly when they came into our lives. Im sure there are times when Connor wishes Mackenzie had been a boy to even out the numbers especially since hes the youngest yep, even Mackenzie is older by a whole three (3) minutes.
