I looked at the pictures before I read your journaling - couldn't figure out what Tom was doing. How funny. We've been in a lot of hotels in Europe and lights came on when you put in your key card but when you take it out, nothing works. We went out for a couple hours and when we came back our room was sweltering hot, when we took our room key out, we turned off the air conditioning! We had two room keys and learned quickly to leave one in the slot and just take one key between us so we didn't come back to a sweltering hot. Then discovered a few days later that if you put an old credit card, old hotel key or anything else that shape and size, it kept everything on, then we just turned lights off manually. That way our room didn't get too hot. I really wanted to go to Machu Picchu (still do), but sounds like Cusco is a great place to go too. I thought Cusco would just be a ramshackle little pit stop, but this sounds really nice!
