What is a birthday without candles and balloons?  Boring, right?  These icons have become synonymous with celebrations and festivities, so it’s only natural to use them on our birthday layouts.  But what can you do to keep them from becoming tiresome and dreary year after year?  Why, you can alter them, of course!

An easy way to add some zing to candle embellishments is to enhance them with chalk, markers, ink, rub-ons, etc.  On this layout, I added some decorating chalks around the edges of the flames to add depth and interest.  I also added a little bit to the swirl in the center of the candle.  I used a candle die, but there are many Cricut cartridges that have candles on them.  By applying rub-ons to the base of the candles, I was able to use them for some journaling details too.

This next idea is perfect for a little girl’s birthday layout.  It’s also a great way to use up your patterned paper scraps.  In this layout about my daughter’s fifth birthday, I used balloons die-cut from some of the scraps that I had left over from the papers in the layout.  I cut two layers and punched holes with a regular ¼” hole punch in the top layer.  Then I ran the punched balloon through my Xyron machine upside down, which applied adhesive to the top side.  Finally, I sprinkled some Martha Stewart glitter on top, layered the shapes, and had a fun, festive embellishment for my layout.

The final birthday embellishment I have for you today is actually a birthday decoration that can be sized down for a layout.  I made this banner for my son’s birthday, but I used basic colors so that we can hang it up for anyone’s birthday.  It’s very easy to re-create this banner and turn it into a miniature version for a scrapbook page.  Since the larger size is constructed of very basic shapes, such as triangles and scalloped circles, you can use a variety of readily available dies or punches to create them.

Don’t settle for dull, uninteresting embellishments on your birthday scrapbook pages.  Kick them up a notch with some quick, easy techniques and products that you probably already have at home.  I think you’ll like the results.
