I think paper piecing and layering is one in the same, thats how I understand it anyway! I think there is just different terminology.
I think it is what Cricut is doing with all the different layers to a cut, so you can cut each piece/layer in a different color, to make the shirt, pants, hair, etc.
The same goes for a SVG (or whichever)file that has all the different "parts" in a file.
Peachy Keen stamps have great faces for people and animals.
And as mentioned before, pop dots/foam work great to add demension to your piece.
I have only done a few things, to me, they are time consuming but worth the extra effort!

I wouldn't start out with a complicated pattern, but it is time comsuming if you're cutting the pieces by hand. I think for a baby shower card, there would be a lot of easier patterns you could use. Also, start off with larger patterns so there aren't any small detailed pieces to cut. It all takes practice. I'm lucky, however. I have a CraftRobo that I can cut my pieces out precisely. If you have a cricut (or other cutting machine), you could probably find some svg images that you can use on the internet.
