I do both, acrylic paint and then I glimmer mist most of the time. I have also used distressing ink. Depends on your project. If its something big that needs alot of coverage then I would go with acrylic paint. But like a small piece of chipboard you can just ink it.
I use acrylic paint or if I want to use sprays or inks I gesso first to seal it so it doesn't all absorb and look muddy.
