I did some research and found that formaldehyde is used to make some adhesives. Have any of you had the same experience and what have you done about the odor?

I have noticed that smell to, I just thought it was how they smelled really bad.

I dislike the smell to but after a little bit it does go away. I leave the plastic off the whole day I am scrapbooking when I first start using a fresh one just to get ride of that smell.

I too have had mats that STINK really bad!! I had to leave them outside or in an open window for a couple of days. While the smell did go away and I had forgotten they smelled that way, I worry that the odor, formaldehyde is not a good idea to have in the house for any length of time!!

Thanks for the reminder, I have new mats on hand for when I need a replacement. I think I will put them outside for a few days so they will be ready when I need them!! They are even double bagging the mat, wonder if that is so the smell doesn't get out till opened??

I just opened a new one yesterday and dreaded it because of the smell! But by the end of my crafting day I couldn't even smell it anymore. I just always assumed that was normal because of the adhesive?!!

Well, I don't know exactly what formaldehyde smells like, but yes, the mats stink real bad when you first lift that clear sheet off, then after awhile it just goes away.
