good question. People have been pasting photos in albums and journaling forever, but the photo safe, archival quality scrapbooking we know today i think started with Creative Memories...or at least that was what I was told when I went to my first class/ crop in 1996. The idea was to get unlabeled yellowing photos out of acidic magnetic albums and into a photo safe environment and to journal to share the story. No more boxes of nameless photos. Anyone else???

I know it was super big in Victorian times. It really was SCRAP booking. Locks of hair, treasured cards, letters, drawings were saved and decorated with found items, scraps of ribbon, paper lace, etc.

That's what I've been told too. Although I scrapbooked my 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12th grade years of school back in the 1970's, well before Creative Memories. But my scrapbooks didn't hold many photos, just trinkets and stuff. I had the old fashioned photo albums for the photos. So somewhere along the line the two got married. I just don't know when.

A large part of the movement in scrapbooking can be traced to Mormons, type that into google, you will be amazed!

Yes, Mormons is where it all started, way back when.

But the recent boom of scrapbooking the modern way as I understand it, Creative Memories was one of the first companies. Then it just went crazy in the last 10 years or so.

I also heard Mark Twain was a scrapbooker!

The first Documented Scrapbook, as we know it today, I.E. A picture glued into a book with writing/journaling next to it was in the Middle ages. A miniture landscape painting was done in one part of england and was sent via Messanger (also is the first documented postcard) to another part of england. THe recipiant of the painting glued it into a book and wrote about the sender next to it.

Thanks for sharing these links, I found that first article very informative! I think I'll follow Mark Twain's example and set aside Sundays for scrapbooking! I never knew that about him or that he had a line of scrapbooks. That's very interesting..... This WHOLE thread is very interesting! I didn't know I was participating in something that went THAT far back. I knew my grandmother made scrapbooks back in the 40's. Didn't know it went all the way back to the 1700's, how cool is that!
