Cricut Fire!

My sisters Cricut caught on fire this morning! She was working on a page, started the machine to cut, and went to get her coffee from the kitchen. She came back in, and the machine was on fire! It ruined the machine, the cart in it, and the cart sitting next to it! Some paper and stickers on the table were singed and her paper trays had started to melt! She's sooo upset, but thankfully her albums were ok, and nothing but the table, carts and machine will need totally replaced! A lesson to all of us to be careful with our bugs! Her house is new, and the wiring is good, so maybe problem with the machine?? I'm freaked out a little to use mine now!

Wow, that's crazy!!! If I were her, I would definitely call Provocraft and let them know it happened...hopefully they would send her a new machine.

Was it new? Which Cricut was it? I always unplug mine when I'm finished, not because I'm worried about fires but I've got a kitten that likes to gnaw on pretty much anything that looks tempting...but now when I unplug it I'll be thinking about your sister.

Oh wow! I am glad SHE is alright and unharmed! I never walk away from things I am using just because of that reason. I would still have someone come out to make sure the wiring is good...power surge maybe??? Thanks for the heads up!

Please keep us posted on the outcome and/or the cause of the fire. Holy smokes!

Machine is less than 9 months old-an Expression. Her husband is a Master electrician, so he'll def look into it. I advised her to call Provocraft, and maybe send the machine as-is back to them so they can look deeper into it.

How scary for her! Also scary for the rest of us Cricut users.

Oh my!! I'm glad her and her albums were unharmed. I will defintelely think twice before walking away from mine now. How scared she must have been. Thanks for posting to warn everyone!

OMG! That is so scary!! I will be a lot better about loading something and then walking away while it is cutting!!

Can she try to take some pics just in case she needs them. Hope provocraft sends her a new one.

Thank you so much for posting, I used mine yesterday more than I had any other day, and the thought occurred to me when it made this really wierd noise, maybe it was over heating, I tossed the thought aside and continue to use. I will pay closer attention now. If provocraft does not help her, let us know, maybe we can all get involved and write to them!!!

Oh my goodness - thankfully that is as far as it went. I am glad it was caught in time, it could have spread to other places. Please let us know what happens next.

Thank goodness she was home when this happened and was able to prevent more damage from occurring. I always leave my E plugged in, but maybe it's time to change that practice. I'm glad your sister is safe.

OMG - I'm glad she's okay, but how very scary. What did Provo Craft say when she contacted them? And which Cricut version was it? Just glad she's fine and didn't lose too much.

AHHHH, poor thing how traumatic! Heres to healing and Provo Craft making her whole!

Jeez, how scary for her! I'll be thinking twice before leaving my baby bug plugged in or going out of the room while it's in use.

This will be a great opportunity for Provo Craft to step up and show what a great, reliable company they are. It sounds like a problem with the machine to me, not faulty wiring.

Good reminder about appliances for ALL of us! Years ago, a housemate turned on the brand new breadmaker and left the house. Dumb. I was gone for the day, but forgot some paperwork and came home. The house smelled "scorchy" and I discovered the breadmaker smoking and the white unit was turning black and melting! Another few minutes and there would have been a horrific fire.

I hope your sister's story will have a very happy ending! Do keep us posted.

I'm so glad she's okay and caught it in time. It's very scary to think what could've happened. I'm mortified of fire ever since we had a large power surge a few years ago. I woke up to light bulbs exploding and tv screens glowing. I started screaming at DH, who ran to the basement and cut the power. When the fire dept. came, they told us it was a very large surge, so we called the electric co.. We were very surprised, but the electric co. reimbursed us for everything that was ruined, computer, microwave, tv's, surround sound, etc.. If it was a surge, she may want to contact her electric co.. I'd spent years drilling it into my family's head what they were to grab in case of fire. And all I grabbed was 4 library books and a box of tampons. DH grabbed the tv remote. Please let us know how everything turns out.

I know I'd grab my external hard drive that has all my photos on it. lol I don't care about anything else!

The firemen looked at me like I was nuts, and the kids have never let us forget it. DH and I about laughed our heads off when we realized everything was alright.

So sorry for the OP's sister, I'm sure PC will make it right with her, if it wasn't a surge, maybe even if it was. They are a great company.

My house is over 100 years old (it has been rewired and brought up to code) and I am definitely OCD about unplugging small appliances while I am out.

wow! I had one fire about 15 years ago,,I do NOT need another!! They are scary fast, and I have never seen anything go as fast as that fire! Thank goodness your sister is ok,everything EVERYTHING can be replaced except their lives! Seriously, don't even bother to try and grab anything in a fire except your kids and animals,,,,and get the heck OUT of there! Flashover happens really REALLY fast!

OMG! I am so glad she wasn't hurt. I have heard the Cricut catching fire at least three times now. I have been using a Cricut going on four years. Tell her to call ProvoCraft.

My last Expression made this horrible grinding noise and started smoking. I had her for three years when that happened.

ScrapofRobin- Your fire story was funny, I am so sorry but I was laughing. You know a girls got have her tampons and her hubby the remotes.

Hi All, Thank you for your kind words of support. I called PC for her, and they will send her a new machine. They'd like to have the other one as well, and will be sending a shipping label too to get it back to them to check it out. She's on her own though for carts, I'll start looking for replacements cheap. And a new table and paper racks too. Again, thank you for your good thoughts and be safe-UNPLUG!

Most importantly I'm so glad it wasn't worse that it was. Everything can be replaced but her.

That's so awsome of provocraft to replace the machine. Wish they'd replace the other cartridges as well and especially if they find that it was a bad machine that caused all this. Or at least the cartridge that was in the machine. I'd send pics of the damage to everything to provo craft with the machine and maybe send the burnt cartridges as well.
