Paper Piecing???? Is it too hard?

Hiya ladies,

I'm still fairly new and learning sooo much from all of you so thanks. I've been seeing a lot about paper piecing, some images are just amazing. Is it too difficult to do? Other than youtube, are there any good places to check patterns out.
I am making invites for my cousins baby shower and am really tempted in trying this out but I'm scared to screw up.

Some paper piecing patterns are going to be harder than others, but I say you should give it a try, you might find you really enjoy it, or it isn't for you. It will get easier as you go, so if you make a couple of practice invitations it might help!

i got a cricut and i keep saying i'm going to get into paper piecing but haven't yet.

If it was too difficult to do, then nobody would be doing it. I wouldn't start out with a complicated pattern, but it is time comsuming if you're cutting the pieces by hand. I think for a baby shower card, there would be a lot of easier patterns you could use. Also, start off with larger patterns so there aren't any small detailed pieces to cut. It all takes practice. I'm lucky, however. I have a CraftRobo that I can cut my pieces out precisely. If you have a cricut (or other cutting machine), you could probably find some svg images that you can use on the internet.

No paper piecing are not all that hard. True there are some very intricate patterns out there, but for the most part they are pretty easy.

You can even make you own out of coloring books.

The PP in the upper corner I did from a Precious Moments coloring book. I scanned and then re-sized it to size I wanted, printed out a few copies and cut my pattern.

You should give it a try I like the patterns from scrapbooks etc too. Piecing is fun because you can add a lot of dimension if you use foam adhesive for the pieces. You can also make the pieces any color you need for your LO.

I have used illustrations from my dd's board books and wrapping paper too. have fun.

I've done it the old school way using tracing paper. It's not hard but a little time consuming sometimes. I don't do it often. Maybe I'll give scanning a try.

okay, so what is the difference in Paper Piecing and layering? Based on what I say here I dont see a difference.

I thought paper piecing was taking an ordinary shape and make it something outside its normal shape. Please correct my understanding.

I had no idea what this was until yesterday! Stumbled upon the FB page of a company tht sells the patterns. I was misreading the subject line of this post all weekend as "Paper Piercing"!

Anyway, anybody who likes this, Precious Piecing is looking to add to their design team. You can get the info on their FB page.

I still don't understand it 100%. I see that it is like cutting out simple shapes from patters to make an embellishment. I am still unclear on how to get them so detailed? I assume that the crafter must have to draw the face details in for the faces? So, while it is pretty simple, you probably have to like how well you had draw things.

I think paper piecing and layering is one in the same, thats how I understand it anyway! I think there is just different terminology.

I think it is what Cricut is doing with all the different layers to a cut, so you can cut each piece/layer in a different color, to make the shirt, pants, hair, etc.
The same goes for a SVG (or whichever)file that has all the different "parts" in a file.

Peachy Keen stamps have great faces for people and animals.
And as mentioned before, pop dots/foam work great to add demension to your piece.

I have only done a few things, to me, they are time consuming but worth the extra effort!
