good trimmer

I have a small trimmer currently from creative memories, which I love. Though it is small. Is it wise to have a larger trimmer that can hold a 12x12 sheet? If so, what is a good trimmer to have. There are so many trimmers out there. I am getting lost in all the tools available though I am determined not to buy up the aisles.

Yeah, it's really nice to have one that fits a little bigger than 12x12, so if you just want a straight cut through a 12x12 page. I often make like a 3" strip to across a page. I have a Provo Craft one I picked up for $5 that works great. I also have a Siskars one(?) I think. It's just nice to have one on hand.

Fiskars a solid and reliable. you can get them on sale or with a coupon at the chain craft stores. i keep a few on hand all the time.

It is a good idea to have a bigger trimmer. I really like the Fiskars that I have.

A 12" trimmer is a great investment. I literally could not scrap without mine. I use it all the time.

I just recently got the MM trimmer and really like it. It's usually about $50 but I used a 40% coupon at Joann's to get it. It would've still be worth $50 to me though! I also have used and really like the Creative Memories big trimmer. I had issues with my Fiskars cutting straight, but mine was an old style and I've heard better things about the newer ones they've come out with since. I heard excellent things about the Purple Cow trimmer too and may have bought that, but I found the MM one cheaper.

You can check out reviews on products in the superstore here too, which I usually do on almost everything before I buy it!

I have the Fiskars Euro trimmer that seemed good at first but soon started cutting unevenly. Someone told me to try a new blade and it seemed to work but only for a little while. So, I finally went and bought the MM trimmer and I love it. It was $50 but I had a 50% coupon at Michaels. I agree with Sarah that it still would've been worth it to pay $50!

I have an Xacto arm trimmer. I never could get a straight cut with the slide carriage trimmers. I got mine at Staples for less than $30, it seems a little pricey, but it's the best $30 I ever spent. They also had a larger size, but I opted for the smaller one. It cuts 12x12 paper with room to spare.

I just bought a Cricut trimmer tonight at Wal-Mart - $7 and so far, so good!

Thanks to everyone for their input. I haven't purchased a new one yet, but am looking into different ones that everyone has suggested to see what I might want to get.

I have a 12X12 Fiskars paper trimmer as well and love it. I picked it up at my local Tuesday Morning store for around $10.
I also have a smaller Ek Success trimmer that I started out with but soon realized that I really needed a 12x12 one. The EK one also tears up my pictures if I try to crop them with it.

I have the Cricut paper trimmer (came with a free scoring blade) that I got for $9.99 at M's. It was okay when I started out (a month ago :p) but it didn't always cut straight. I recently got the MM Precision Paper Trimmer with self sharpening blade for $25 at M's (usually $50 and I used a 50% off coup). Read the reviews in the Superstore... this thing is great for cutting the thinnest of strips. I've used it with paper and cardstock with clean, straight cuts, so I'm sure it'll do the same for photos. Hope this helps!

Usually you can get on mailing lists for stores like Joann's and Michael's. Joann's sends Coupons to me all of the time, Michael's only once in a while.

Check your Sunday paper for ads for craft stores also.

Just a suggestion. when you do spend your money get one that is 13" because there is always that paper that is a little longer than 12" and so many of them will crimp your paper when you cut it.

I have a Purple Cow trimmer, and xacto stationary trimmer, and the cricut trimmer. (don't laugh, I'm an art geek and I used them for mats and such!) The cricut I take to crops, but I don't like the way the back of the paper looks (I'm picky), the xacto is great, but the cuts aren't always straight. The Purple Cow trimmer is amazing- expensive, but considering a trimmer is one of the most important tools it was worth it.

For the trimmer, what does "MM" stand for? thx

This is a great question! I too am looking for a new 12" x 12" trimmer, but with all the options out there I haven't been sure what to look at. After hearing what people have said about the MM trimmer (and reading the reviews in the Superstone) this baby is going on my wish list!

Making Memories

I had a Fiskars trimmer but the blade tended to move too much in its place and caused the paper to be cut really unevenly. But we e-mailed them and they are supposed to be sending us a replacement as it was pretty new! Still waiting though...

I have Creative Memories 12x12 trimmer-I've had it for at least 4 years and just had to sharpen the blade(with crumpled foil)recently. Now, its good to go again!

Do you recommend swing arm or rotary blade trimmers?

I have the $7 Cricut trimmer from Walmart (I feel sorry for whoever paid $9.99!). It works fine for me... it doesn't seem to cut crookedly, but it does leave little "fuzzies" on your cardstock when it gets dull. You can just run your finger along the side and remove them, though.

I am SO looking at the Cutterpede trimmers, though... both the large one and the portable one.

P.S. -- I have the "Mini Straight Edge Trimmer" listed, however, there is a 12" one that looks exactly like that. That's why I listed it. The one simply labeled "Trimmer" is the large one that I would like.

I have the Cutterpede larger size - I've only been using a couple weeks but it's been working good. I'm having trouble getting used to the arm thingy but it been cutting all sorts of sizes for me. I like the magnet at the end that helps hold the cutter straight.

Still someday I'd like to get the MM trimmer.
