print white letters on a colored background?

ok, i know there is no such thing as white ink. but is there some way to print white letters on a red background---without using up all my red ink having it print the red background?

is there any way to just run a red sheet of cardstock through my printer and have white letters print on it?

No, because, like you said, there's no white ink. Now I've heard of printing in a light gray and then tracing over it with a white pen, but I haven't tried it.

No.... You can use a pen...but otherwise I have just used the ink in the printer. Depending on how long you want to journal hopefully it doesnt make that much of a dent in the ink.

I used lt gray before on a layout and it looked like it white. So I would try that.

There is a really good white pen on the market (but I know--it's not using the computer and I do 99.9% of my journaling that way, too. BTW, it's a Uniball Signo). Hmmm... Wonder if there's a way to do it at a photo copy store.

Do your journaling just how you want it but save it to a jump drive (or upload it to Staples.com) If you upload it you get 10% off too. I think color copies are like $.39. So you could do the color file and save it as a jpg and get a color copy printed out from your file. I believe it would be cheaper than using up your ink!

You actually can reverse if you use digital scrapbooking , otherwise, a white pen. Uniball is the best!

you want to print from your computer?? if so, i would use a light color (any) font and set your printer pref's to grayscale, print the doc (and you can print on cardstock, or vellum, or whatever you want, i've even printed on fabric) just be sure you put the correct size in before you print). when it prints out, you can use a white opaque fine-point marker to lightly trace the letters and then color them in - i LOVE the decocolor super fine point markers, they are SO opaque, just like paint. i cheaped out once and got a ZIG - it didnt do the job, so go for the decocolor or the pentouch, if you want white, these are the ONLY options that you'll be happy with. You could also get really crafty with MS Word (or whatever your using) and use the watermark features to put your text in, and print it that way so it'll be super light when you print it. keep in mind that these tips may not work on really dark paper, you may have to tinker with the word processor to change fonts and background colors to get the desired result, but it can be done! Funny that I of all people am trying to find ways to avoid using your printer! (Printing is my specialty- on most any challenging media from vellum and metallic paper to silk flowers-- but I feel your pain in printing a red rectangle just to leave the white behind. Too expensive and wasteful -- much ink!)

I got another idea...create the red box, white letters on the computer and save as a jpeg. Instead of taking it to Staples to have a color copy printed, have it printed as a reprint. (Isn't it like $14 at walmart or Costco?)


Another idea but it's better for title than journaling is stamping:
Stamp the letters in white and use white embossing powder on red paper... Or stamp the word in clear on white paper. Use clear embossing powder and then coat with red ink and the stamped letters will resist the ink.

Also, Jaquard is sending me a Castaway pad which bleaches the paper (but is supposed to be more effective and less blotchy than using real bleach). Maybe stamping with that on red cardstock might work (but I bet it depends on the cardstock as to what lighter color appears).

And of course there's the old white stickers.

Depending on how much text you want to do, there IS a way, using PSP or Photoshop, that you can KINDA do this.

Set the fill color for the letter to be white. Set the outer color to be black, or another color that matches your LO -- this is going to give you a "mat" around all of your text.

Do a few test words to see how wide you need to set the outline color. You can adjust this through whatever the line width setting is for your program. What you want is for that outline to be wide enough to touch the outline of the next letter, thus basically giving you a solid line of text that you can cut out in one piece.

Now, start adding your text to your image. Remember to leave enough space between the lines to make it easy to cut each line out. Adjust to make sure that it's going to fit onto the size of the red (or whatever background color you want) as well.

Print your text. Cut along the outside of the mat color, then adhere to your background.

Not just white text, but white text with its own mat.

Also, if you're having trouble finding how to set the line width, there's yet another way to add the mat to make it easy to cut the journaling out.

Go ahead and create your text, making sure once again that it fits onto your CS. DO NOT deselect it, keep the text selected.

Find where your program gives the Effects option of creating a Drop Shadow.

You want to set Opacity to 100%. Select the color you want for your mat/shadow.

Adjust the size of the shadow by increasing the number values equally until once again the letters touch each other. Accept.

Print, and cut out lines in one piece.

For this particular project, I'm going to create the document then have Staples (or another printer) print it for me.

My oldest stepdaughter is always calling things, people, ideas, etc. "lame." So, her younger sister wants to make about 50 1" stickers that say "lame" for her sister's use. I think it's just too funny. But she is deadset on the sticker being red with white font.

We tried light gray and it still looked silvery or grayish on the dark red cardstock. So I've created a document with 50 1" red circles that say "lame" in the middle in white font to have printed.

printing in white

I just went to my small-town Wally World today and they had a whole new glorious section of Martha Stewart scrapbooking items. I bought these opaque markers that included white...you're supposed to be able to write in white on dark papers...I just tested them quickly, but they seem to work so far!

If someone were to come out with a white ink for scrapbookers - they would make a fortune!!!
