I found sewing before scrapbooking so my love of fabric and trim often shows up in my layouts and cards. Having them organized and in places where I can see what I have helps me to remember to use them.
Jill, I just came into some fabulous vintage linens, some that are in too bad shape to use for their intended purpose. I thought I would cut them for layouts so I will be checking out your gallery for ideas on use. Other than that I don't use fabric in layouts. I should, then at least my DH would know I am using some of that stored fabric. Going to look for ideas!!
This is an easy one for me - I use almost no fiber in my scrapping! I think I might have a couple rolls of ribbon that I've used on cards. I do quilt, but my fabric stash is all nicely stacked in a cabinet in my bedroom
I have quite a bit of space committed to sewing/ribbons and fibers. Of course most of it isn't scrapbook related but rather for other crafts.
I have a sewing machine on the top shelf of my closet.
I also have four big plastic drawers in my closet devoted to this kind of stuff. One holds material. One holds my cross stitch items. One holds my yarn and crotchet hooks. And the final one holds ribbons. This last drawer did require organizing and purging. I have two shoe boxes inside that hold the ribbon spools upright so that I can pull them out easily. Each is labeled.
I also have a small white bin filled with smaller spools and a few other fibers. I have a book binder ring with tags on it hooked to the front that is my inventory for what is inside that.
I have also done the same with the washi tape and glitter tapes in two other bins.
Oooooo vintage fabric is my favorite to work with. I had a stash of vintage hankies I sold last week but I kept 12 to use for baby girl shower banner pieces. I fold each hanky corner to corner (making a triangle) and hang them over strands of ribbon.
I checked my gallery for fabrics in layouts and only found one. It's an old layout showcasing a great grandmother's Sunbonnet Sue unfinished quilt block. When I get some time I'll upload some layouts with fabric.
A fun layout I did last summer has a vintage barbie sundress on it with photos of granddaughters playing with old barbies--a favorite for sure because I don't have to store the dress away anymore.
I'm so proud of each of you for sticking with the challenge and helping others with your posts.
Thanks so much and I'm excite do see your finished masterpieces...:)
Yes, I had checked through the site categories under fabric finishes and did not find many, if any, that actually had fabric on them. I was disappointed.
Now that you mention hankies, I may still have a stash in with my quilt fabrics! I was always going to make a hanky quilt....... too many ideas and not a long enough attention span.
I have used fabric on layouts. My mom cut out some shapes out of fabric. Some of them were hats some were flowers, She heat bonded them. Well, I had to figure out what I was going to use them for when I inherited all her craft stuff. So I ironed them on my layouts. I will post a couple this weekend. I also made some cards.
that is nice to incorporate fabric into layouts etc. I did have a big box full of fabric (tulle) etc. but during my move ( when I finally got my own craft room) I must have misplaced it!!!!
I rarley use ribbon but i have a few times and It USUALLY looks nice!! I have a hello kitty tin holding all of my ribbon. thats about it. haha
I love using ribbon in layouts too. I have a bunch of ribbon... Not very much fiber though. I also have used embroidery floss in layouts. I store my ribbon in different ways. I have sorted them kinda like I did my paper. solid colors, and then themes. and I put the themed ribbon in the containers with the same themed embellishments so it is all together so if I want to do a themed layout then I have all the themed items in one place.
Wouldn't I love to have my sewing all set up as well as my papercrafting? It's not going to happen though. My fabric is all in drawers downstairs in the box room, never used these days. My Singer sewing machine lives under my scrap desk, and gets hauled out (at the expense of my back) only when needed. The only space I have actually to use it is on my ironing board in the lounge.
Ribbons and fibres I dealt with right in the very first week. I'm pretty happy with how I have it, given that I have so little space. I'll admit, I'm tempted to get (or make) a ribbon bag so that I don't have to lug all my Chinese food containers to crops. That will mean that I'll have one set of (all colours of) ribbon in one place, and the rest still sorted by colour in the tubs, but that would free up the boxes containing the spools for storing washi tape. Which is currently in the basket with my gems, just for easy crop transport.
Drat this crop. I've looked at the ScrapRack solution and I simply don't have the space to store it, before we've started on the money to buy it. This week I'm discouraged.
I started collecting glass jars. I like having all my stuff stored in divided containers but there are so much stuff that is too large for divided containers that I am going to store in the jars. I have lots of buttons and flowers. Leaves.
I wish I had a larger room I could have my sewing and papercrafts and the office space all set up at once. We have 1 6 foot table 1 4 foot table and a drafting table in the craft room for work spaces for 3 people.
Right now we have a jig saw puzzle on the drafting table
I love using ribbon in my layouts and even though I rarely, if ever, make cards, it seems like the card is never complete until it has some ribbon on it.
This is one area I have very little work to do. A while back I converted to the Ribbon card system and I love it! I just use cardboard that I cut from packages that come in the mail. If it's got any writing on it I cover it with cardstock. It's so easy to see all the ribbon I have and easy to add new ribbon. I do have some new ribbon and fibers I've aqcuired over the past few months that I need to go add to this system.
I do have a few spools that I prefer to keep on the spool, and those just sit next to my cards.
I've got a question... where would you all store your craft wire? I can't decide if it should go with ribbon/fiber or with metal embellies or with jewelry making.
Vae, the only craft wires I have are used for jewelry making and floral designing. So, since I have bins for both of those crafts, I store mine with those things. How do you use your craft wire mostly? Or does that help?
Well mine is in a drawer set along with my mesh rolls. And as I'd forgotten about it, obviously that doesn't work as a storage solution. Hmm.
I've used it as flower stems. I've threaded paper bunting on it. I've twisted it into flourishes. Those are similar uses to ribbon and fibre rather than metal embellies, so I might put it with the baker's twine. And that needs a bigger pot - I've just ordered some more! It's good to have an idea of how to store new things before thy arrive though, isn't it?
I finally managed to get a photo taken of my three bin set that holds washi and glitter tapes and my small ribbon spools. I had to first remove the garish knobs that were on them before I could. That just meant buying some appropriately sized screws for the new knobs. So, here it is...
I am enjoying the Get Organized classes/emails, but I really need to jump ahead to week 12 (I'm just finishing up #9). Is there a way to get this one now?
Hi, i'm a student from Singapore currently working on a project discussing about the problems with the organization of sewing supplies. Can anyone give me some solutions you took to organize your supplies or rather what problems are you having with organizing it. Thanks!
