Journaling Genie's

I'm pretty sure that's what they are called. You know that tracing things with the lines on them that make nifty shapes.

Anyways. I think they are so cute and right now most of my journaling is pretty boring. I also do it without tracing down lines and then writing on the lines and erasing.

So, your comments on the Journaling Genie's are appreciated. Do you like them? Do you have a favorite? Do you have one you wished you hadn't bought?

I have two. One that I've used a few times and one that has never been used. I draw the lines with the Chatterbox Vanishing Ink Pen. Then I write in my journaling and the lines disappear in about 24 hours.
I like them, but I really have not used them that often. Lately I've been using a line of journaling cut-outs by Scrap Ease and using my CK combo CD for journaling shapes, or typing them out using Word.

I have a couple of the Genies, and find I usually just use my clear beveled ruler and lightly pencil lines. Then after journaling ink is really dry I use a white eraser to remove pencil lines. I find that some of the different shapes (curlique, wavy, etc.), are not very readable for journaling, but dry embossing the outer frames looks good around the actual journaling.
I must warn whoever wants to listen I have had a great deal of experience with the Genie vanishing ink pens, and its not pretty! I have been a quilter for yrs. and when these vanishing pens first came on the market I couldn't wait to try it--chalk marking your quilting lines is a pain when you are hand quilting! The ink did vanish as promised if you marked very lightly, but in months or years later the ink returns as a dull reddish brown shadow that looks like blood stains. Working on one hand quilt for several weeks, and having it ruined is really heartbreaking. Imagine how you would feel if next year you were showing off your album and you came across these ugly stains. The time savings isn't worth the loss of your layouts--and after all how long does it really take to erase?

In my humble opinion I do not like Journaling Genies. I can't give a specific reason but I just found that I bought two and don't use either much. I would much more strongly reccommend the CK Best of Creative Lettering Combo software. Mine just came in the mail last night and it is wonderful. They have a GREAT section in the software specifically for making Journalettes (as they call them). Plus, I figured the price I paid for the software online (36.00 including shipping at http://www.scrapbooksuperstore.com) would make up for the cost of purchasing several Journaling Genies which run 6.00 each at my LSS. Happy Scrapping!!

Unfortunately I don't have a printer. I also like using my handwriting for journaling, so I think (even if I did have a printer) I wouldn't get a lot of use out of a cd. That's why I was thinking of using the Journaling Genie. But which one should I get? One with straight lines, or wavy lines, or different shapes?

Yes, I totally agree with you on the handwriting part, I like mine as well but I purchased the CD so that I could add another dimension to my layouts. If I were you I would buy one with wavy lines and one with straight lines. When I do use the Genies, I use one called Scroll which is made up of straight lines. This is best to use if you need to fit your writing into smaller spaces. I also purchased Funky which is made up of wavy lines. If you use Funky plan on having alot of space to do the writing as some of the templates on this one are bigger than a 4 x 6 picture. Goodluck choosing one!

Thank you for the info on the vanishing ink pen! I just bought one and thought that it was such and ingenious invention...but if it is going to reappear later...I don't think I want to use it! I really appreciate the info!

I have a few journal genies and like how they turn out, but I use my computer for so much of my journaling that they're really not too useful to me I have such awful handwriting, it's really better that way.

Well I bought the Funky one yesterday. I have to admit I did 4 pages last night and used it on 3 of my lo's. All 3 were about water so the wavy lines worked well. I think it really added to my lo's.

Meggie, I'm glad the Genie is working well for you! I can imagine the waves would go great with the water theme. I think it is just so great to be able to count on the community here to offer great tips on products. I definately trust everyone here way more than a salesperson at Michael's!

Thanks everyone! I am officially in love with my Journaling Genie. Bernie you are so right about the spacing! I have a terrible time with that, especially since I don't even have a ruler I use the sides of my lettering templates!

I really like my Journaling Genies. I use the one with the straight lines most of the time because I prefer my own handwriting in my albums. I lightly pencil in the lines and erase them with an artist white eraser when I am finished. For me they are better than a ruler because the lines are evenly spaced apart - something I could nover do myself with a ruler. I do use the genie with the wavy lines occasionally if the page calls for it although it is not too often. HTH
