Ideas for cards for beginner

I've never made a card before, but I am a scrapbooker, I've got all the stuff I need, but never tried a card, this year and the coming year are milestone bithdays and events in our family, my DH 50th, DS 40th, DD 30th and a new baby due in nov. I would LOVE to make them a really awesome card each but haven't a clue where to begin. I've seen some really awesome and classy stuff on this site and would love if someone could set me on the right track. I just dont want to overdo it and go about it like a LO!!!! lol thanks in anticipation...

Check out mojomonday.blogspot.com. They have card sketches, and I think it would really help you. I love them!

WOW, thanks for that!! what a great site, a good guide for me to begin with and a new sketch every week, I'll have a go at that.

When I make a card for a special occasion, if I run low on ideas, I go to Hallmark or any place that sells nice cards for inspiration. I might just use the saying or it just might get my creativity flowing!

Sue, this is a pretty simple idea, but it works: lots of layers of mats. Take a breeze through the card gallery and you may notice that the cards that have multiple layers of matting tend to look a bit more polished or professional.

The image is matted on tan and orange, and then the background pp is matted on orange and then the card base. It's a lot of paper, but hey - they're all scrap size, right?

Just had a look on your gallery, Fab card!! I do see what you mean, do you mind if I copy it a bit?? I need a guide! I'll post my first one on my gallery, it's got to be 50th birthday! for a bike mad Guy.. perhaps instead of the bear eating pizza I can get him riding a harley!!!lol

Oh!!! No!!!!! I'm a scrapbook fanatic as it is.... will I be buying hoards of new stuff???? lol I've already bought some card blanks and envelopes, some xmas pp, and some green ribbon !!! lol .... but I need to do some b'day one first before the christmas ones! what I'd like to know is.. how to cut out the front page . fancy like, on my cricut and leave the back blank... i've tried on a scrap piece but made a real hash up of it!!!

Just been to look in your gallery, I wonder if you can tellmewhat you use to color your images? do you use 'copic markers' never used them but seen them a lot on cardmakers pages. are they the best thing?

I think most people use copic markers to color their stamped images, but I don't have them (yet) so I use watercolor pencil and a moistened paint brush.

I'm still a newish cardmaker, but I use card blanks, too, and once I decide on the "background" paper, I adhere everything to that and then adhere that "stack" to the actual card itself. That way brad backs and ribbon ends don't show on the inside of the card. This seems very elementary, but it took me a while to figure it out... duh! Look through the gallery at some of the great artists out there and do a little scraplifting!

There's definitely lots of supplies that work for both scrapping and cards, and plenty that don't. I use my Nestabilities dies almost exclusively on my cards; same with my Copics and most of my stamps. I also prefer to buy 6x6 or 8x8 sized paper because they scale down the patterns so they translate better on cards.

I use mostly Prismacolor pencils and chalks. That's the other thing we should mention. Even though most card makers will use different kinds of coloring mediums, we usually go through them all before settling on a "favorite." This is all the fun part.

Checked out your card. You did a really nice job!

On the coloring, I can't justify the cost of copics right now, so I just use plain old Crayola brand colored pencils, and blend them with odorless mineral spirits. I think it does a good job for a lot less money. You can check my gallery for examples.

Love the card -- you did a great job!
