Xyron questions & answers

In another thread, Georgie aksed about a Xyron. In answer to your question, the Xyron is a cool laminator/sticker maker machine. The large size is quite expensive and can stickerize an entire sheet of paper. They now have two smaller versions that are much more affordable caled the "baby xyrons". The 510 model is around $50 and makes stickers, laminates, and makes magnets. The 500 model is around $25 and just makes stickers. The idea is rather than using messy glue sticks & glue pens or sticky tape tags, the xyron allows you to insert your punchart, die cut, photo, whatever and turn it into a sticker - much easier.

Now for the questions: I have heard various negative comments about the baby xyrons and also excellent comments. I am considering buying a baby xyron (don't want the bulk of the big model) but which one should I get?

I own both the 850 and the 510. In retrospect, I probably would have been better off with just the 500 after the 850. I too didn't want the bulk, and put my 850 away for when I need things of that size (mostly kid art and/or school projects) and I use the 510 for most of my scrapbook needs. Being that I really don't to make laminates or magnets for scrapbooks, I really only NEEDED the 500. I bought the 510 with a Michaels coupon though so...

One word of caution though - I find that if you don't plan very well the Xyron (no matter the size) can be a huge waste. Quite a bit gets wasted. I find using "dry bond" much simpler. It's a page of "glue dots" which you put your items on and press down and peel up. Any unused dots can re-used. I use it a TON for letters and small die cuts, etc. For larger/bulkier items you'd need more tacky adhesive, be it Xyron or glue dots or something else.

I have the Xyron 900 and the tiny 150 (for small items) and I LOVE my 900. I waited until Hobby Lobby had a sale and I ended up getting it for the price of a 500.

I must tell you, there's a huge perk to getting the larger Xyron. For instance, I just finished a Halloween layout for which I had cut individual 2" letters spelling out "Jack-o-Lantern" to lay on my page. I lined half of my letter up neatly in my Xyron, cranked, lined up the other half, and in about six cranks had all my letters stickified. (Like my invented word?)

That would have taken me forever to do using a smaller machine. But, it is true -- it's easy to waste cartridges, which is why you should have a large machine and a tiny little handheld as well.

I have the 510 and the 150 (X) and the Cheetah 2" I find that I use the x and the cheetah the most. The 510 with repositionable is great for computer journaling because you can print on regular paper and then put your special paper through your xyron, stick it over the first copy and reprint. My handwriting is not the greatest and I love to use all the great fonts you can find on the computer.

I have the 500 and the 150 (the X). I use whatever size fits because it is very easy to waste paper and cartridges are expensive. I mainly use it for vellum and transparencies.

I too have the 900 and love it. You do have to watch what you are doing as not to be wasteful. I bought mine off of a shopping channel, can't remember which one, anyway I thought it was very reasonably priced. I received the machine and 3 cartridges for $75.00.

I have the 510 and X. The one thing that bothers me about the Zyron is the sticky residue left on the newly created stickers. What do you do to get rid of the stickiness?

I got a used once with the magnet, laminator and sticker maker off E-bay for $60 with shipping to Canada. I haven't used it yet....got it 6 months ago. I will soon though.

I only have and use the Xyron 150...love that little beauty! I haven't had any problems with "sticky residue" so sorry I can't answer, maybe undu?

I got my 510 at the goodwill store for $1.00!!!! What a steal and with a new cartridge, it works good as NEW! I also have the 3" one - called create-a-sticker and the orange 'X' 150 model. The two smaller ones were very inexpensive, like $4.00 (on the 3" one on clearance at wal-mart) and $5.00 for the 150. I love them and use them for all kinds of stuff (not just scrapbooking) and always get my re-fill cartridges at Michael's with my 40% off coupon. I would love to have the big one, but am really out of storage room in my crop room What's a girl to do?

I have the large 900, but never hardly use it. I have the mini Xyron for my Sizzix and Quikcuts letters.

I have the 500 and I use it a lot. It really is a good idea to plan out what you're going to do because you can end up creating a lot of waste. Like Meghan said, it's really nice for when you have to do a lot of little things. Gets it done in no time. And I always buy my refill cartridges with coupons or wait til they're on sale.

I have the Xyron 150, 250, and 510, and I love them all. I use the 150 the most for little things, and the 250 and 510 for larger items. I even have a laminating cartridge for the 510, so that I can make things like laminated bookmarks. Like others have said, I wait for sales or use coupons to purchase the refills.

This is a great idea! I also do a lot of computer journaling, but I always use tape to attach my special paper to run it through the printer. It can be a real pain to get the tape off though. Why didn't I ever think of using the repositionable Xyron adhesive?? LOL

I have the Xyron 150 and 510 and love them both. Don't feel a real need for anything larger. Just used both of these for my son's party.

Stick the "i" on Mr. Incredible, and made some cool magnets as party favors. I love using them for scrapbooking and card making. You do need to rub around your item before lifting the plastic sheet off. If any residue remains I have an adhesisve eraser.

I have all of the xyron sticker machines and the design runner and the I have the xyron personal cutting system on order. I love all of there products.

OMG!!! lol Im just in awe! I just recently (before cmas) got myself an Xyron 500 and I am sooo happy and love "playing" w/it. But ALOT of you guys have LOTS of them!! WOW, way coooool. lol My neighbor has the smaller 250, and bought her son the little X for cmas, so between us, we got it covered.
We also have a business, so we actually have a big laminater, but I havent thought of anything to use it for for sb.

hehe I just got a 150 and I LOVE LOVE LOVE the little guy! lol It works great for the little embellies and letter

I have the 150(RAK from a friend), 510, and a Cheetah runner. I had my 510 and I rarely used it until I started doing circle journals. It make everything so simple to run it through and use. Like the other poster says if you don't plan you will waste a lot of sticky paper. I like the Cheetah because it give me great coverage for bigger areas. When you need refills, use you coupons. They are a lifesavers. Good luck on trying to figure out which one you want. There are all really great.

I have the 510, and also the 900. I LOVE my Xyrons! This is the best machine ever invented. I got both of mine on ebay. The 510 was new in the box with 3 extra cartridges, and I got it for $26.50 - half the normal retail price. Got the 900 the same way - only paid $62! Awesome scrapbooking tool! My favorite!

I have one and have never used it.. Guess I better dig it out and try since I did pay for it.

I read somewhere a good tip for using your Xyron more efficiently. Since you really only need adhesive on teh edges of items when you do a large piece put smaller pieces under it and the glue will be applied to them and your top piece will only get the edges.

Does that make sense?

I had an 850, but donated it to Goodwill because I didn't use it often enough to justify the space it occupied on my scappin' table; also the cartridges had become impossible to find locally. I now have the 510 and the little X, and I use them both constantly, and love them
