Combining Art Journaling and Scrapbooking??

Howdy,

Has anyone here started scrapbooking after being established first as an art journaler?

I'm very comfy with art journaling, but I don't use any photos, so the journals serve as a personal diary but not a family photo album.

This Christmas I bought my special needs adult daughter a baby girl scrapbook album kit to record the first year of her new cousin's life. Having worked a few pages with her, I'm wondering how to start my own scrapbook for family photos.

The thing is, I'm a little unsure how to combine my love of art journal style with photos. I'm not used to patterned papers and embellishments - kinda wondering if it's possible to create a scrapbook using techniques I already know and like.

I really am very keen to start a scrapbook for my bf and I to add to as time goes by... I'm just a little lost on how to translate the skills and style I have now into scrapbooking. Does that even make sense? Maybe all I've done is confuse everyone!

Anyone have any suggestions or links to share?

Most importing thing I learned about scrapbooking is, you can't do it wrong!
I also made a lot of diaries before I heard about scrapbooking.
I normally pick up some pics that I really like, and write down what my feelings are about the photo or photos. Then I start looking for paper to match with the photo and look for embellishments to match. Try mixing them in a way you like and see where you will put your journalling (type or handwriting). If you are satisfied about the result, you can glue them together or print of you like digital scrapbooking.

I think the hardest part would be deciding the size. The most popular scrapbooking size is a 12 x 12, square. I think large blocks of journaling plus photos would lend itself better to the traditional 8 1/2 x 11 size. And you may feel more comfortable with that size. And wouldn't it be great to just carry around your "journaling pages", write what you want to write right there on the spot and then add them to your scrapbook pages later. It would be kindof hard to do if you had to carry around a bunch of 12 x 12 pieces of paper.
But the good news is there are lots of pages in the gallery to look at for ideas and there have been several "no photo" challenges.

PS Most of us have the opposite challenge. Great with the photos, struggle with the journaling.

Also, it's important to know that scrapbooks don't HAVE to have photos. Most do, but many scrapbook pages are journal-like or art driven in nature rather than photo driven.

I'm a word lover... so, although most of times I scrap about pictures, once in a while I really want to scrap about journaling - my, words, a song, a poem, whatever. So I take a picture as an embellishment for those words, you know? My focal point is the written stuff. Take a look at my Eternamente layout - I love that song and wanted really hard to scrap about that, so I looked for a picture of me and my hubby to illustrate. Just as I used to do at my journals. Hope it helped.
