What is a Fixative

I bought Gelly Roll's Stardust Clear roll on glitter pens this weekend at CK Convention. They are fun and have a nice sparkle to them. On the back it says "Not intended for archival use. For permanence, use fixative." Now I'm worried if I use them they will yellow or peel off. My question is what is a fixative? and Have you used them? TIA.

fixative is something that you apply over things like glitter, pastels, chalk, etc to keep them from flaking off or smudging. Some people coat glittered things with a glaze like Diamond Glaze , other people use an aerosol spray, like you find in art supply sections of craft stores.

I think it does. It's been awhile since I've looked for any, but I'm pretty sure it does.

I have a couple cans of fixative left over from college art classes. THey do say Fixative on the label.

Yes, it will say fixative.

If you go to an art store, go to the hobby painting supplies and look for fixative.

I use Grumbacher Myston Workable Fixative.

Never use hairspray as a fixative.
It has chemicals that break down paper, deteriorates it and turns it yellow.
Hairspray is for hair not paper.

Oh, darn it! I got these pens at a show this past summer and I am in love with the effect. I didn't even realize they needed a fixative (and would also have asked the same "what in the heck is THAT?" question!). What a pain.

Yeah, I'm feeling like that also. I would not have purchased them had I read the small print. I bought a pack of pretty colors to use.

I looked at the Grumbacher Fixatives at Ms. The asst mgr pointed out that the two kinds that they have do not say archival safe or acid free, only that they are non-yellowing. I went home and looked on the Net but couldn't find anything one way or the other. Then I found Krylon fixative. On the can, it said both archival safe and acid free.
