Do you prefer matte or glossy finish

I usually use glossy for no particular reason so I am not opposed to matte. My friend uses matte because you don't the fingerprints on them. I am about to order a bunch of pictures and can't decided. Why do you like what you use? Do you find that the matte finish makes the picture colors not as bold?

I prefer glossy, and I do think that the colors are less bold with the matte. Sometimes I want matte, though. I did a layout recently that looked rugged, and the glossy print just wasn't right. I ended up reprinting the photo in matte.

I print my own pics at home and I use semi-gloss:)

i always go with glossy...but that's now that my kids are a little older and not as many people (hence, fingerprints!) look thru my pics before they go into an album. i def like the glossy better...i think the color is bolder and more defined.

After spending $$$ on several different types of photo paper, I discovered one by Kodak called Studio gloss and I LOVE it.....It's the only one I use now.

I prefer matte to glossy. I don't like the shine on the glossy and all the fingerprints that accumulate on them.

I print onto semi-gloss too. I hate the glare from gloss and matte are just a bit too subdued in colour.

I prefer Matte because of the finger prints, I wish my lab had semi gloss it would be the best of both worlds.

I hate the fingerprints, so I'd have to go with a matte finish. However, my favourite is the gloss luster finish at Walmart.

I like the matte finish better, too. I think it actually looks better than the glossy. Plus, no fingerprints! Yay!

I like semi-gloss or luster the best. If those weren't options, I usually take matte over glossy.

I used to prefer the half and half setting where it wasn't quite matte but it wasn't quite gloss. Can't get it anymore.

If your photos are going to be touched mattes better. The surface is wipeable it's more archival friendly etc.

If you want a big 8x10 which is going to go in a frame under glass and fade over time get gloss.

I like glossy (except, of course, for the fingerprint factor).

I prefer matte for a couple of reasons. I don't like the fingerprints and combined with the shine of the page protector on top, sometimes you can't see the picture very well.

I prefer matte over glossy for the finger print factor.

I use matte, I hate fingerprints too.

I like my kodak photo printer because they print glossy, but with another protective layer on top, so the fingerprints and such don't stick...you can get them wet, but it doesn't hurt the ink. Bad thing: have to edit the red-eye out since the protective layer prevents the pens from working.

When I order them, I get glossy.

I loathe glossy prints, mainly cause of the fingerprints and shine on them. But....
If I wanna print digitally, I have to order glossy as they dont print in matte yet here. That is, when I order online. I also loathe to print me own photos with a printer cause for some reason I always end up with stripes in the print. Even with a new printer. I'm very iffy when it comes to the perfect print..lol..

I'm definitely on the fence here....I'm going to be ordering mine online to have printed locally and my local store will only print the matte while a store about a half hour away would print glossy..(This is my first time ever ordering prints online and I'm going with snapfish.com)

I totally get the page protector glare thing on top of glossy photos so I'm going to order my first round of pics in matte. Will post back here when I get them on my impression of them in matte vs. glossy.

UPDATE: I just "spoke" with a snapfish person via chat and found out that my free 55 prints are for mail order only. If I have my Walmart print them, I pay their cost which comes out to over $10!. Compared to less than $4 on snapfish, I think I'm having them mailed to me, LOL. Plus I think I'm getting the glossy since matte will dull the colors of the photos.

Wow - always fun to see old threads reappear. Interestingly, in 2009 I said that I prefer glossy, but now I almost always get matte. Anyone else comment on this post way and have your preference change in the past five years?

Until a little over 2 years ago I would have said glossy, just because I had never seen matte photos and that sounded weird to me...except for the no fingerprints part! Then I saw a friend using matte prints at a crop and when I compared one with a glossy print I was hooked on matte. Ever since then I have ordered matte prints...and have even had to cancel and redo at least one order from Snapfish because as I hit "place order" I realized that it was saying "glossy"...noooooooooo!!!

I actually prefer glossy. I think they are sharper. I have an old cloth that CM used to give away for wiping finger prints off of your photos. So, if there are any on them, I can wipe them away.

I actually get a combo between the two. I get something called luster finish from Costco. It has a very slight gloss. I think it's a great compromise.

But if I had to pick between the two, I would prefer matte. Just personal preference.

Recieved my first order of prints from Snapfish. Matte finish and no borders. They all came out great, colors are really good when held up to a glossy version of the same photo. Really pleased with them.

Matte, when I first started out I used glossy when I first starting scrapbooking then I moved to matte. I like the texture better and it doesnt hold those smudges.

Glossy look brighter, they are perfect for contemporary projects - it's hard to incorporate glossy pics in vintage or heritage, I'd say Yet, I really prefer matte! They are the way cleaner. Your fingerprints are rarely left on matte unlike glossy finishes, and matte don't stick together if you accidentally leave them face to face. And if you get any dirt (glitter, ink, speckles - anything) mattes can be just brushed or wiped without any problem, glossy would certainly have the stains left...

I prefer to always use glossy, but I have ordered a few IG photos here and there in Matte.

I generally prefer matte, because I end up with lots of fingerprints on my pics.

I prefer the brightness and sharpness of glossy. I just give them a final wipe with a soft cloth before placing a LO into the page protector. I agree that matte will probably be better when/if I get to heritage pages.

I prefer matte because of the fingerprint issue and I also think it kinda of adds a depth to the photo I know it probably sounds weird.

That being said I generally order glossy because I get my photos at Walgreens where I work and the matte finish is only available mail order and you can only use your discount in store purchases and I am to cheap to not get my employee discount!
