Please Help! How do I set an eyelet in my page?

I have MM eyelets (heart metal letters) and metal eyelets. I am using the hammer and a setting mat, but I keep smashing the eyelet and it never penetrates the paper. I don't understand how to get the eyelet to go through the paper. Any suggestions would be appreciated! I'm ready to just use a sticker and move on

Did you make a hole first? You need to use a hole punch, or something to make a hole in the paper. THEN place your eyelet. Place your eyelet setter on/in the eyelet and it THAT with the hammer.

I have the eyelet tools that came with the MM set, but I"m not sure which one is the hole punch and which one is the eyelet setter?! Sorry if these are ignorant questions - I'm rather frustrated with the eyelets. Thank you for the above reply!

The one with the black interchangeable tip with the holes in them are the paper punches. The one metal tool with the ,um, how do I explain... Flower-like maybe? end, that is the one you use to set it.

First you match up the black metal hole punch to the eyelet to figure out which size hole you need. Then, you put that tool into the paper and tap it with the hammer to get the hole in your paper. Then you put your eyelet in the hole (The front of the eyelet, obviously, on the front of your work.) Turn your paper over so that the back of the eyelet and paper are facing up. Then set the "felower-ish" tool over the eyelet and pound! This will flay out the eyelet and set it. Now flip over your paper and viola! You have et your eyelet!

This may be a stupid question, but why doesn't MM include instructions in the package?? When I first got my tools, I didn't realize the hole punch and setter were different, and lodged an eyelet in the middle of my hole punch! Took a little work to get it out, too!

no kidding, thank goodness for the nice girls that posted a tutorial on here otherwise i'd have noooo idea how to use any of it.
