Cutouts from magazines?

I was wondering if any of you do this...go through old magazines and use phrases or pictures for your LO.
I have made two scrapbooks (which look like "********"books compared to what I've seen on the site..haha) so far and because I just started i thought that using stuff from magazines would be cool, but now I'm not so sure if there are better things to use.

If you're using magazine cutouts and are concerned with making archival-quality books, you will need to spray the magazine cutouts with some kind of acid-free spray (Make It Acid Free and Archival Mist are two I can think of). If cost is a concern, you can always hit up dollar stores, discount stores, Big Lots and that sort of thing. They always have supplies at those sorts of places. Good luck

Do you mean using the titles from magazines as titles for your lo's or actually cutting out the words or photos from magazines and putting them in your lo's? I'm not sure if magazine paper is acid free- are you spraying it with some type of archival spray? or putting it into a clear pocket of some sort??

When I used magazine cutouts for my scrapbook, I would look for words or phrases that would describe a picture on that page. For example, a bunch of my friends and I went skiing last Feb and we all had on our face masks for the picture. I cut out a phrase that said "Hollywoods Most Wanted" and used the glue dots and just put it on my background paper with the picture and slid it into the top loading scrapbook. I didnt know you should spray it with acid free stuff. Why is that?

BC the acid in the magazine paper will cause anything it touches to fade and become brittle with time. I had newspaper clippings in an old scrapbook and in just a couple of years they were completely yellow and falling apart.

Archival safe materials will stand the test of time.

Sounds like fun. I think I am going to try that. What a great idea for altering.

On the subject of acid free....you could cut a piece of page protector and wrap and seal your title in it. I think this will help reduce the acid. The plastic envelopes is another solution. I believe you can also laminate these items to protect them from becoming brittle. I am not sure if it will prevent them from fading.

I have seen some older scrapbooks like this but I have never thought to try it. It seems like a great idea to me and it seems like it would be fun! I may have to try it!
