Michaels, Why Do You Have to be Such Jerks

Okay, so I think most of us can agree that the Michaels coupon policy is rather ambiguous.

Each coupon says "one coupon per day." What is not stated is if that means "one of this particular coupon type (like 40%) per day" or, "we will only accept one coupon from your hand, per day."

What are your experiences? Do they take multiple coupons (applied to different items?) or do they give you a hard time about it?

I love my Michael's. I take "one coupon per day" as I can only use one coupon there.....per day.

Nope....at my M's in NH you can use more than one coupon per day as long as they are different....40% off one item, 40% off Martha Stewart item, 20% off entire purchase....etc.

That's what I have always done, too. And I tried to as well today (40% off one item, 15% off the rest of the purchase) and they got really shirty with me. I explained that they had never had a problem with doing this before, and they said "Well they may have let you GET AWAY WITH THAT before..."

I left feeling like a criminal.

That's Michaels for you...it all depends on the mood their {lovely} cashiers are in that day....they are not consistent about any of their foolish policies....

but I can only use one coupon a day, whichever one gives me the greatest savings.

i've always been allowed to use more than one coupon as long as they are different types. I'd call the manager -- it was probably just the cashier. I had a terrible experience around Christmas last year -- I called the manager and he was great to me.

you can only use one coupon per transaction. You use a coupon, pay, then walk away. Pick up the next items you want, get in line again, use the next coupon, and hope for a different cashier. Even if you get the same cashier they never remember you anyway. It's called "Coupon Circling". If you are ambitious...you can even leave the store and come back after droping off your first purchase in your car.

I think the most I have ever "circled" was 4 times.

Our M's said the policy has changed. I coupon circle or drag my teens there with me all of the time. They never say anything if I go a second time through. I go to a different cashier just so it isn't as obvious. Once in awhile I have multiple coupons and they usually take them if they aren't for the same percent off. If someone is rude I would surely ask to speak to the manager in front of the clerk so they are less likely to be rude to the next customer who asks.

Maybe Holly will have better info for us in November.

My M's always depends on the cashier. Some cashiers are strict, and some will ring up multiple coupons. I call it the "M's Lottery"

Not every Michael's is the same.

Sometimes you win. Sometimes you lose.

Hence, the issue at hand.

I always shop in 2's.

One for me. One for a friend.

And sometimes back through again.

If we're really serious about something, then we travel from store to store.

Not everyone can do this, but in Southern California (where availability is a major issue!), a scrapper's gotta do, what a scrapper's gotta do!

Kelly, at my M's, I honestly think it has to do with the type of day the employee is having. It seems the more upset they are with management, the more generous they get with the coupons!

My M's (I go to 2) are very good, I usually get the same cashier at the one and she is very nice to me!
As far as the 1 coupon per day goes, I understand that ( as far as being the same coupon)but many time they themselves (M's) runs more than 1 coupon(like mentioned above- 40% off 1 item, 20% off total reg bill etc.) so why shouldn't I be able to utilize that, they put em' out, I should be able to use them, without having to go through hoops to get it.
At J's ( and yes, I know, different store, different policy) but you can use 20 coupons, as long as they are different. Even the 40%'s- i get one in the mail, one from the newspaper, one from the store and I can use them all together as long as the barcode they scan is different.
I'm just saying, you'd think M's would want the business, instead so many negitive comments, as I seem to always read on here.

I was at J's the other day-went in there with a circular I got in the mail from them. The cashier scanned ALL of the coupons on one order. Simple and sweet.

My M's will take more than one coupon IF you physically walk out of the store and then walk back in. To me, that is just making their customers jump thru hoops. Ridiculous.

for me it also depends on the cashier ...

usually, they will ring me up multiple times if I pay in CASH so there's no paper trail that they didn't follow company policy

M's can be all over the place - but usually they are very good about the coupons - I've notices recently with sales being down that they have relaxed on being tough on customers so that they get the business!!

I agree that it totally depends on the cashier! But usually I find they only allow one per day. Sometimes I tell them that one coupon is for me and one is for the classroom, they usually let that slide.

It's funny about coupon circling though-what a waste of time and completely illogically for the store to make you get back in line!!!! Just ring it through-if you are going to allow circling then why not take your customer service to the next level and just do it all at once, what is the difference!!!!! The customer still gets the deal, the store still honours the deal and the customer gets much better service rather than being made feel like they are doing soemthing wrong having to go back over and over!!! JMO!

I'd prefer not the shop at M's but that coupon is helpful for repeat stuff like adhesive.

Totally agree! Some days they let me use 2 40% off coupons by doing 2 separate transactions. Other days they refuse to do that. When they refuse, I just walk out the door and right back in. They legally can not refuse it then, per day means per shopping trip.

Mine will let you use multiple coupons as long as they are used in different transactions. I don't have to get in line again. At least that is what happened last time I went there. I rarely shop there unless they have something J's doesn't. I love my J's. They'll take as many coupons as you have, include other local craft stores. I've walked away saving twice as much money as I spent!

As I am reading thru 2 pgs of posts here it occurs to me that M's stores & cashiers are being totally riduculous. What would happen to all of us if we went to a chain grocery store with all our valid coupons only to be told we could only use 1. Not one per item but 1 total. Wouldn't we all get PO'd over that? Also I personally have 5 different M stores in my local area and 2 J's. The cashiers at all of the M stores are rude, inconsistent and make me want to bang my head on the counter. At J's I have never ever gone into that store without waiting over 20 min to check out. Drives me straight to being po'd. No fast lane, no one trying to get more help, and I avoid the place like the plague.
Give me internet shopping anytime! And please build a HL here in the NW....PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You really can't blame cashiers for refusing coupons--they are simply doing their job. A cashier can get FIRED for going against company policy.

I'm not saying this is an excuse for being rude, but there really are rules they're supposed to follow.

If you have a problem with the policy, take it up with management. Send an email, write a letter, etc.

Our Michaels really bends over backwards for scrapbookers. I bought $128.00 last Saturday.

They are so good to us at crops. We were at a crop all day and the procedure is to cut UPCs off everything and they give you a brightly colored envelope to put all the bar codes so they can scan at the register and you get 10% even after using coupons for everything you buy at the time of the crop.

Anyway, I had a coupon for 25% off everything - and 40% off one item. I thought it started the coupons were good that day, only to find that it started the next day and I had $128.00 worth of bar codes I had cut off, couldn't put the items back and buy them the next day!

I told management that I would have held off until the next day for all this stuff if I had realized.

She rang me up normally without the coupons but took off the 10% crop discount. Then she told me to come back the next day to get my 25% back when the store was open and the coupon was in effect.

She said they would honor it the next day sicne I didn't know and cut off the bar codes.

For crops, they assign our own scrapbook person to us who stays in the room with us and helps with the cricut and gives us ideas. It is awesome to have our own person just for 5 or 6 of us!

When I signed up for their emails about 2 years ago, I got a 50% coupon. I have used that same coupon over 100 times by making copies of it. Usually they don't say anything at all but sometimes a cashier will look at me funny since they don't even give those coupons anymore. But it does not have an expiration date on it so they have to take it!

I wish now I had kept mine. Its hit or miss with Michaels. Every time I get one of those stubs to participate in the online survey for a chance to win the $500 gift card I mention this very situation. I also complain about a couple different things about the stores in my area (like rude staff or one's who haven't a clue about crafting stuff). That's probably why I've never won one of those gift cards.

You get those 50% off coupons because the list price of most items is double what it should be.

Yes, I have used the coupons more than once on a single day. I pay for my purchase using one coupon and leave the store to put the item away in my car. I may shop in another store nearby before coming back to buy something else using another coupon.
