I would like to put together a scrapbook together of my Mother over the years for her 90th Birthday. As I am new at this hobby could any-one help me with suggestions how to go about this.
    Many thanks

Welcome to sb.com ! I would suggest you start off with your favorite picture of her, then I would go chronologically from there. Do a lot of journaling. Get stories from friends and relatives. It will be easier to get stories from her if it's a surprise. Interviewing her will be easier if you just get her talking rather that firing questions at her. Remember, these are just suggestions. As for the looks of it, check out the gallery here for heritage layouts. This is going to be a wonderful project! I really should do one of my mom, too. She's 95.

One of our friends made a scrapbook for her dad. She asked all of us for copies of pictures we might have made over the years, and for stories about her father (he was a wonderful character and a lot of fun). The resulting scrapbook was so impressive - many people responded to her request. Most of the stories were handwritten, and wonderful memories were told. The book was put together chronologically as much as possible, and you might ask these people to date their photo if they can. She used b/w, color, tints, every type of photo, and kept embellishments to a minimum. The backgrounds were a neutral "vanilla" color, and she matted a few of the photos, but not all. Some of the written pages were matted but not all. Some of the responses also sent some memento of the story they told. It is a wonderful book, and her father enjoyed it greatly, looking at it almost daily, and talking about it with friends and family. He has passed on now, and the book is even more precious. And the last page was left blank for a picture of him looking at the scrapbook - adding another touch to a wonderful project. Sorry for the long post, your question opened doors to many memories for me.

Wow! A picture of him looking through the scrapbook - that is great! What a wonderful idea!

I am making a scrapbook for my 88 year old father. You would not believe all of the things I have found out about him that I never knew before I started this project. I started with baby pictures of him and I just worked through his life. I love the idea of getting a picture of him looking at the scrapbook! I never thought of that!

I made albums for both of my parents. I definitely recommend trying to keep it chronological. It is the easiest way to go for organization purposes.

I started with their baby photos as title pages (but a favorite of your grandmother might be a nice idea too and then the youngest photo on the next page would be good....). Then, I added their grandparents and parents, went to sisters and brothers and growing up and where they grew up kind of photos. I had young adult photos (my dad was in the army - my mother went briefly to the convent actually) and then the wedding photo. I included several photos of the two of them together in both. One of my Mom's favorite LO's is a two page spread that is simply embellished with appropriate "love" quotes next mostly candids of the two of them together. Then, I documented their children (with a page or two each - depending if they had children of their own) and then went back to more homestead and family photos through the years. We ended my father's with a favorite photo and a nice poem and my mother's with another favorite photo with one of her favorite sayings on the page.

My parents loved their albums. My father has since passed away and yes, the album is probably more precious. We made sure it was available for viewing at the funeral and visitors really enjoyed seeing it. My mother will not let them out of her sight now... So, I haven't been able to upload them here unfortuantely.
