Using Xyron refils without using Xyron machine

Has anyone done this and can give me some pointers?

I just got a silhouette and I'd love to use a Xyron , however, I have issue with it, as there is so much adhesive that gets wasted.


Does anyone pull apart refill cartridges and use the adhesive with good results? Could you share some pointers if you do?

That's the way I prefer to use them. I hate being wasteful and hate having to look for things to put into the machines to fill in those gaps between things I really needed adhered.

I also bought the 850 and 900 refill cartridges. You can use just Xyron ed backed paper in your Silhouette. For this I use the permanent type and a full sheet. Remember your machine will not use the last inch or so of that paper. I use it without the mat this way.

I also use the 850 and 900 repositionable cartridges to make new mats for my Wishblade , or to refresh a worn out one.

I keep a roll of 150 with me to get those pesky little pieces adhered. Also I'd use a strip, either 150 or 500 on a strip of paper to use in my Sizzix machine. This way, I just peel and stick.

I love the Cheetah refills because these are micro dots instead of a continuous strip of adhesive. The Cheetah refills are great for not leaving glue buggers behind.

But if you just cut the white adhesive side from going into the feeder, you can roll it out for easier access. Then you can place your paper, rhinestones, etc, where want without worry of how it will line up.

Most of the time, I totally detach the white roll. All the cartridges will roll up on themselves except for the Cheetah, which has the glue on the outside of the roll.

Okay you have my attention LOL I've cut back on using my Xyron because of the waste so I really want to see what you're doing! I love the adhesive but the waste bugs me. Going to be watching for pictures TIA

Vivian, I'm glad you can explain it better than I! I'm the one who told Jen that I do it, but I'm not good at explaining how to do it. Someone showed me at a crop in a hands-on way, and I don't really know how to describe it without just doing it in front of someone!

This is how I use them too. I do not have the actual appliances, I just use the refills. I never thought to remove the roll tho. I'll have to try that.

i has a roll remove itself for me, it was fustratinf for the letters. kept rolling up on itself and sticking to everything. i dont use the machine (except to store my refills) i pull out the refills and just insert the letters by themselves and can usually fit two next to each other on the roll.

but dont cut to close to the end on the out side....the roll removing it's self for me incident...

and use one of those embossing tools to rub around the letters to get rid of the sticky after effect

Thank you for the description and photo. I'm afraid if messing up a refill trying this but if I ever see on on clearance I'll give it a go. Or maybe when I get close to the end of one of my current refills.

I saw the 150 refills at Big Lots for $2. I didn't use Xyron then, but I bought the 150 now and I LOVE it !! Bling Fairy Vivian, thanks for the pics, I'm going to BL today, and try this, I'll let you know!

I just tried it with the small refil for the x machine and it does work.
