zentangle

I just read a little about zentangles in a magazine and then did a search online. I'd like a little bit more info from scrapbookers. Do you tangle? How do you use it in your scrapping?

Oh my, I had no idea what it was so I googled it. I used to zone out and "zentangle" all the time when I was but a young ADD girl in school. I can't believe they actually have a name for it now. I used to doodle like that A LOT on my layouts but haven't for a while. A few years back for a NSD challenge I 'zentangled' a whole 12x12 layout! Hmmm... it's not in my gallery here. Might have to dig it up!

A few weeks ago I was doodling and came across this term. I did not know that it had an official name either. Sounds like a dance!

I can't believe this has a name. I did those all of the time in my teens and would fill up pages full of tiny, graphic doodles...well I probably threw in a Jennifer + Brian or whoever I thought I was going to marry when I was a kid - lol

Yes, I do & can remembering doing so as far back as around age 6 or 7. I can remember sitting at my aunt & uncle's restaurant counter, eating french fries & doodling away.

Thank You for this thread! Otherwise, I might never have known there was an actual word for what it was & is!

Sidenote - My aunt has terminal cancer. She has over 100 of these that she both doodles & colors to take her mind off her pain. The majority of them have an angel theme. She has been known to incorporate our names into them.

Thanks for responding. They seem like artful doodling to me, too. It's supposed to be very relaxing. I'd like to see any tangled layouts you have in your gallery.

Wow, I did some research on this and it looks so fun! I doodle but this has some structure to it. Not sure about working it into a layout, but it may happen. Thanks for bringing it up in a forum.

zantangle is fun. I did a small spiral album 3x3 making different zentangle for family member and placing b/w photos on the other page its relaxing and it different.

Hey Tante....thanks for the thread and topic. I've never heard of this and never done this. I'm not good at drawing and so I've never ventured into stuff like this...but this looks like it would be perfect for my not so talented self!

wow- cool to see this topic here! I'm a psychologist and I use Zentangles quite often in therapy as a form of artful relaxation, and I also use it for some perfectionism work. I made one for a layout once but didn't end up using it.

I was doing a zentangle at school today and my students asked me what I was doing. I showed them how to get started (I watched a youtube video so I had SOME clue as to what I was doing) and they took off with it. It was pretty cool to see kids who aren't "artistic" making art. I showed them my first one (that I did the other night in about a half hour) and they ran with it. Thanks for sharing.

A freind used to doodle geometric shapes but she only ever doodled the same shape again and again. micro mazes.

After reading the forum post about Zentangles and doodling; I did try it. I have a lo in my gallery if you want to stop by to see it. It has received several comments.

Like Cheball, I tried to Zentangle after I read this post. I started yesterday afternoon and finished it about 20 minutes ago. Here's what I came up with...(it's 6"x6")

Thanks! Yeah, most definately time consuming!!! That little 6"x6" took five and a half hours yesterday and 45 minutes today!! I hold pens/pencils really oddly, and by the time I was done, I had a callus on the side of my ring finger where I rest the edge of a pen while writing/drawing. Whoops!!

I'm so happy some of you got so interested in it! I saw one on another site that could easily be used as a scrapbook element. There was an outline of the Statue of Liberty with the zentangle done all around it. I guess any shape could be used as the central blank shape and then the tangling done around it. I would fit nicely into some quilt style layouts.

Alright... well I've been zentangling 9 3x3 tiles since you brought this up (Thank for the new addiction... LOL!) and I finished late, last night. I'll post in the gallery once I mount it on a larger piece of paper.

You're welcome about the addiction! lol At least this one doesn't cost too much. However one of the sites recommends you use only the best paper and pens. (They sell a beginner's kit for $50.) Maybe some copic markers would work well!

I would love some copics, but just can't justify the cost right now. Plus, I have a whole drawer full of pens... I really don't need more! But, if you can get them, DO IT!

I had some nice thick watercolor paper I used for mine. I noticed that my textured cardstock didn't work very well and copy paper was just too thin. My micron was out of ink, but I had a couple sharpie pens with a fine point that worked beautifully. It's important that you use a pen that dries instantly so there's no smudging.

I've been doing them for a few years now and I just use zig writers- the broad and fine points are perfect. I also went to an art store and got a 0.005 point pen- super fine for really tiny detail work. I usually only do black and grey zentangles so all in the cost has been under $10 for the black and grey zigwriters and the 0.005 point pen. For me the "zen" part of the zentangle is minimalist, so the idea of using simple supplies like plain black markers really adds to the experience.

A friend introduced me to them a few weeks ago and I was hooked! I drew a lot as a kid but kind of let that go as I go older. My dad will be thrilled to know that Zentangling has me back into the mindset of drawing again. It's been sort of a confidence booster. Now, what I want to know is how you work Zentangles into scrapbooking? I would love to meld the two.

I don't use it for my scrapping- but I use it CONSTANTLY while I'm at work! lol

While I'm on the phone or between files or ...just waiting, which everyone seems to do- I do this, now!

I used to constantly write the alphabet. The moment I saw these- I started doing them...

they're fun!

There's a name for doodling? And it's considered a form of artwork. Seriously. Unbelievable. I Zentangle at boring meetings. Now to figure out how to add that to scrapbooking. I'm sure it could be done.

I have yet to figure out a way it could be added to one of my layouts- but it is great to have an excuse during a meeting-

I AM ZENTANGLING! IT HELPS ME CONCENTRATE ON WHAT IS BEING SAID!
