Shrinky Dinks

A friend of mine made me a Christmas pin to wear out of Shrinky Dinks. It was SO adorable & made me want to make some gift tags, ornaments, etc. out of SD. The problem is I can't find them. I looked at Wal-Mart yesterday & everyone acted like I was crazy for asking for them!? Suggestions?

I bought my shrinky dinks at Michaels. They come in packs of white, black, brown, almond and frosted and they have a multi-color pack too. I bought a pack at my local scrapbook store and it wasn't buffed. I noticed a big difference between the buffed and non buffed after I used my colored pencils to color them...the color didn't set in to well on the non-buffed. If you find some thats not buffed you can rub sandpaper over it. I can't remember what I paid for it but, it wasn't much for a pack. I hope this helps. I love using my punches to get my shapes for my shrinky dinks.

You might also search this board for more info on shrinky dinks - there has been talk before about them. There may even be something in the Each One Teach One thread.

Using a punch for the shrinky dink! Duh!

I've been cutting them out by hand or with the Sizzix.

I just tried them at a SU party this past Sunday. It was kind of fun. I guess I did do one at a LSS about a year ago, but I didn't remember much on it. We did use sand paper to rough it up so the pencil would stick.

I asked about it at Wal-mart and they thought I was nuts, and I asked at Michael's and they thought I was nuts. I still haven't been able to find any. When I asked at Michael's, they thought I was talking about shrink wrap.

At my Michaels the shrinky dink paper is in the scrapbook section (first isle, top shelf to be exact ). When I first looked at Michaels they thought I was crazy too and told me to look in the kids section..couldn't find it. I finally found it in scrapbooking.

The lady at my Wal-Mart kept suggesting Shrink Wrap, too! I finally gave up. Will check at Michael's tomorrow though. Fingers crossed

My Michael's has them in the rubber stamping section. I don't know how many times I overlooked them before I saw them. They are hanging at an angle on a "thingy" you flip through.

Also look in the toy isle at Target I think. they sell a shrinky dink oven and I think they have the extra sheets there.

I did buy my shrinkie dinks at Walmart. It was called shrink plastic, i think.

In the Dollar Spot @ Target they have "Shrink Art" that is already pre-printed. Worked the same, but the pieces are pretty small before shrinking. Something fun & cheap to play around with!

I get my ink jet printable shrinky dinky stuff at Michael's near the stamp section, usually by where they have the packs of vellum... card making stuff...

They have all the different ones...make sure you read carefully depending on what you will be doing. There is only 1 that you acn print on. The others, you have to do by hand and won't run through the printer. I have both kinds...

They have just the cut and shrink kind at ACMoore.

they also have preprinted shrinky dinks at KB toy store in all different themes..

Those layouts look so great! Did you stamp the shrinky dink paper w/a rubber stamp? I cannot find the blank shrinky dink paper anywhere around me (including JoAnn, Michaels, etc)

LOL! Target had the machine on sale thsi week and I picked one up for dd for Xmas - it doesn't sound like she'll get to play with it much

There is paper for sale on their site for $5 and I've also seen it at Archivers. Looks like they also give out free patterns on the site

Aleen's brand also makes a shrink plastic. I usually get it at a store called Pat Catan's , but I think that they only have stores in PA and Ohio. Most craft stores carry it, but cannot seem to figure out where to stock it as you can see by all of the posts! I use shrink plastic for many things (maybe because I really wanted that shrinky dink oven when I was 10 and didn't get it!). I'll be posting my Christmas tags that I did tomorrow --they both have shrinky dink on them!!

They have the Aleene brand at our Hobby Lobby in the kids section even in 8 1/2 x 11, I think, well the bigger sheets.

Naw-
You don't need special shrink plastic to print with inkjet printers--even glossy, unsanded, and not made for injet printers...you just need the right tool!

Meijer's has some it's by Grafix and its called ink jet shrink film. They only have it in white

I did a bunch of shrink art with the alcohol inks a few months back. I searched on the web for ideas about shrink plastic, I found a "make your own" I think it was number 6 plastic lids. The six is the recycle number. I spent 2 weeks looking at the lids on all the coffe cans etc. But never saw any. Seemed like a good idea though.

Also I use my embossing gun to cook them. Very fun but make sure you have them on something heat proof.

Could the number 6 be size insead? I just looked up #6 recycle and all of that was stuff like packing peanuts, foam meat trays, foam cups...

I know Lucky Squirrel brand says not to use inkjet printing on theirs, as it will bleed. I think they recommended the Grafix brand, but you'd have to check their site.

This is what I found on the web site about homemade shrinky dinks

You'll Need:
aluminum foil
scissors
sandpaper
clear plastic lids (recycle code #6)
colored pencils
hot pad
toaster oven
This gets HOT and sometimes smells.

sand the lid

color your design on lid

heat for a few seconds

It had a few pics also.

My Michaels doesn't carry Shrinky Dinks brand, but rather something called shrink art or something like that. Same thing, works well. It's in the kids aisle.

Going to pm you with the site I use for shrink plastic supplies. They even have patterns you can print out and shrink and they are awesome

After someone looked up #6 plastic and said it was styrofoam, I got more curious. I looked it up and found that #6 is polystyrene and comes as foam and things like plastic forks. The one that actually looks useful for Shrinky Dink are the plastic salad bar containers and yogurt cups.

I got a salad at Kroger it came in one of those clear plastic containers. It worked it was a perfect shrinky dink.
