Using Sharpies

Does anyone know if Sharpies are okay to use in scrapbooking? There are some awesome colors out there, but I didn't know if that would be good or not. Thanks in advance.

I think they're safe to use. I deliberately bought some for using them on acrylic.

I don't know if they are ok .........but I use them in my LOs all the time!

I use the really thin ones for all my journaling. I love all the colors!

I don't know, but I use the thin ones for journaling as well. I love that they write on any surface without smearing.

I've heard both safe and unsafe. I think they're safe, but someone said that they fade with time. I use them too.

I have also used the fine point ones for journaling. Even the felt point ones are good to use on acrylic pieces, plastics, etc. There are so many colors!

I've used them. I've also noticed a discoloration on my older layouts where I did. For example, the journalling I did using a black fine tip sharpie has a yellowish red tint to it in certain lights. my regular made for scrapbooking pens (CM, Zig, etc) don't do that.

I have a friend who used to work for them and they are definetly not recommended unless they are the acid free ones. They do make some (or used to) but the regular ones are not a good idea. Bic makes mark its and they are acid free and have nice colors

I have the BIC ones and they say right on the marker that they are acid free!

That being said, I use them all the time coloring in stamped images or for journaling!

I got a huge pack from Sam's Club for $8 Cdn, they are packed away but I can't wait to try them.

The ones I have are acid free. I checked the back of the package before I brought them. I think they are the fine point ones.

"Solvent Inks -
Solvent Inks allow for stamping on smooth, metallic, and glossy surfaces. They are not acid free, thus not recommended for archival safe scrapbooking with heirloom photos, but their ability to stamp on smooth surfaces and dry without heat embossing, especially on acrylics, plastics, transparencies, and glass, makes them exciting and fun to use on smooth surfaces. Solvent inks can chip and, on porous surfaces, the colors can actually separate (it takes a while though – several years, judging by my personal projects). For example, traditional Sharpie markers are very permanent, but after a few years, there might be a purple or brown tinge at the edge of the markings. Their ease of use and ability to apply to any smooth, metallic, or glossy surface makes them a popular choice nonetheless.

Looks like they have a water-based paint marker Sharpie that is safe, but the regulars markers are not.

I also have the bics Marks It! pens and they do have some nice colors. I agree. Plus, your right- they do say acid free on the pen- so I suppose that would be the safe option.

They have a new sharpie pen out that is acid free and I love using it to journal. I have found them at Walmart, Target, and JoAnn. They are fabulous because they write just like the thin sharpies but they don't bleed through paper. They come in black, blue, green, and red so far...I really hope they expand to the rest of their yummy colors soon!

Thanks so much for your input. I just came back from WM, and I picked up the Bic pens. Have to admit I'm quite impressed. Just got the little pack, but now I want the big one!!

I've never used a Sharpie in my scrapbook because the ink will fade and possibly bleed over the years. They're definitely not acid free.

I love the fine point sharpies. I believe they are acid free, which I read on the package before I bought it. Even still, I rarely write directly on my photographs, so would it even matter?

The colors are great, they are cheap, write well, show up, are permanent and the tips are very fine.

But I am off to check my old scrapbooks for fading. I hope I don't find any!

I use sharpies all the time. Not directly on my pics. I was under the impression they were acid free. But I tested my last night and the pen tester thing I had showed them as acid free.

The sharpie markers that I have say "acid free" on the package. They are the fine point sharpies (like zig).
