extra space

i'm a fairly new one, a couple months scrapping. anyway, i posted a bulletin like this before and i thought it might be something new scrappers would be interested in. i end up having a lot of extra space on 12x12 layouts and i was wanting advice on how to fill it up.

from the other post i got replys such as: enlarge the photo, add cute embellishments, etc.

journaling or poems and extra big titles sometimes work for all of that empty space.

I am in the process of switching to 8 1/2x11. Much easier to fill up a LO that way and I don't have to enlarge everything.

I'm definitely a fan of using larger photos on 12x12 pages, and I also tend to use the space for journaling about the memory/moment/etc - since that's really what my pages are about. You can fill the space with anything that strikes your fancy, really - I just wanted to suggest that you not worry too much about filling ALL the "extra space." That space allows the eye to "rest" between the things you really want to draw attention (like the photos) - so it's not all bad!

Make sure you have some white space so the page isn't overwhelmingly busy. Even something simple can make it look as good (or better) as the pages with everything on it.

It's all a matter of taste. I thought the same thing at first about my 12x12 pages. Now I just use more photos in my layouts as filler. They don't have to be journaled they just add to the larger photos.

I chose 8x8 for my first scrapbook....now that I am starting my 12x12 wedding book I think bigger is much easier. I am a fan of some empty space also....like one of the other girls's said it draws your eyes to the most important part--the picture!

Adding multiple PP to the page can eliminate the "empty space".

12x12 are definitely my favorites to do. I think they are much easier and don't look to crowded.

You can also try that new doodling trend in your white space??

If your "extra space" is on a plain background, I would add smaller off-sized pp mat blocks that are left as is.

You could also try odd size matting of your photo(s) leaving one or more sides of the photo having more matting making the picture take up more space.

You could "doodle" in those spaces as much or little to suit your taste.

When laying out your design, if you find you have TOO much blank space, a simple color blocking technique makes that space less obvious while filling it in. Color blocking back be done in squares, rectangles, strips, circles, symetrical, nonsymetrical, etc. Then leaving one or more blank looks like it was meant to be part of the design of the layout.

If you do the right amount of planning for a page, I don't know if you'll ever have an "extra space" problem. I like to think I'm more of a minimalist and don't add things to a page just for the sake of adding something. I love white space, and it can be just as dramatic leaving it alone.

I'm a big fan of paper layering in the background so I don't have to use as many things to fill in the space, since the space will have a couple layers anyway.

I sometimes have the same problem.
If you go check out my gallery you will get some ideas. I used ribbons, embellishments or make tags. I will use anything I can get my hands on. I have really been liking buttons lately though.
I hate having that extra space.

I love doing borders & headers on my 12X12 pages to get rid of the xtra space...

white space is good from a design point of view, draws your attention to the main object.


another thought is use arrows to point towards the picture/whatever.

As well as added larger photos and journaling, try a border with a couple of embellishments.

When I first started I had a problem of making my photos to small and using to many of them...and even then the page seemed like it was lacking something. Now I try to enlarge my photos and if I don't I definitely don't make them smaller. I also use bigger titles which seems to help out a lot.

Stickers or "clumps" of punches.

It seems like alot of LOs have alot of white space in them now. Someone who uses it well is 1crazyscraplady --her gallery has alot of great pages with white space.

I just looked and you are right. She really does a good job.
