corrugated cardboard

hi, i have a question about corrugated cardboard. does anyone know an easy way to remove the top layer of cardboard to get to the goooood corrugated stuff?? i know they sell corrugated sheets, but I have cardboard here i can use. thanks for your help!

Use a knife to aid the peeling. The litte bits come off quite easily.

But the ripped strips do give a nice grunge look.

Sometimes cardboard has a grain tear it in the correct direction and the top layer comes off with less fuss.

Pretend you're going to rip the box up for the burning barrel....and sure enuf, the top will peel right off! I did this very thing last Thursday while compiling my stuff to burn. I have 4 good sized pcs tucked away now for future use! I personally think if you inked them right, the bits and pcs would look cool and grungy!

u know.. i never thought about the bits and pieces that way!! it might be kinda cool! im thinking of painting it and then covering with mod podge or diamond glaze. it will be a learning experience thats for sure!

Rough it up with a nail file, smoosh it a litle, use distress ink on it, wet the ends, tear, shred and otherwise maim the heck outta it and see what you have! LOLOL!!!

I use a Uchida paper crimper and it works well. Unless I am mistaken, cardboard (or the glue they use) is very acidic.

I use corrugated cardboard all the time for cards, minis and altered items. You just can't reproduce the look with a paper crimper.

I was going to point this out too.
Something to be aware of, if you're concerned about archival quality.

On cards would be great.

I have some corrugated sheets I got from the scrapbook store (I haven't tested, but "assume" they are safe)

Crissy,,,,,,,spray it with a fine mist of water and let it sit a minute,,,,,it's the only way I could get mine off.

I like paper crimpers and have bought faux acid free cardboard but the crimp isn't as strong as true corrugated cardboard.

I use the BG emery file- after the top layer is off, just run the file in the grooves and it comes off very easy.

I use pieces from boxes a lot. I don't worry if there are bits and pieces left on. I ink, spray, distress it anyway. I have purchased a few sheets of colored corrugated paper and they cost a couple dollars a sheet. Not worth it when I can use boxes.

wow..thanks for all your suggestions! i think tonight i will try spraying it with a little water and see what happens. i know that the cardboard is not acid free.. but what if i am covering it with paint, mod podge, diamond glaze? does that lock in the acid? lol

I don't think so,,,,,it probably helps SOME but if we're going to get technical about it, your hands have acid in them,,,,,,wear gloves

IMHO, it's important to know the truth about acid,,,,it travels,,,,,,matting photos on acid free paper does not protect them from the acid of the embellies,,,,,,

sometimes that's important,,,,if it's something you want to last 200 years,,,,,,

but if it's fun and you just want to have fun and if it lasts 100 years, that's good enough,,,,,,then at least you know the truth and can use acidic things when it's not important and not use them when it is important.

I just think it's important to be informed.

For example, it would be heartbreaking to see someone create an important album out of construction paper and glue sticks, only to go back after only a year or two to find the paper brittle, dull, and faded, and all the elements falling apart.

Depending on the acidity of the products, you may be looking at disintegration in 2-5 years, versus 75-100 years with more archival-safe products.

I use a lot of ticket stubs, airline boarding passes and that kind of thing so if I'm not sure it is acid free, then I spray it with "Make it acid Free" which is a product made by Krylon.
