What is embossing?

I came across an embossing page in a book, and it said you need a stylus and some powder. I went to Michaels, and I didn't see a "stylus " anywhere. I just saw powders and a heating element. Is that all you need? How do you go about the process? Can you use a blowdryer? I am hoping to try it on one of my pages, but am a little clueless. Thanks

I knwo that a blowdryer wil not do the trick since it doesnt' get hot enough and the air it blows is not as direct as the heat gun thing.

And that is all I know!! LOL! I haven't tried embossing before so I can't say other than my mother in law does it often and says a hairdyer won't work.

There are two main typs of embossing. There is a lot more to it but the sites below will give you some basics.

Dry embossing uses a stylus and a template. Put your paper over the stencil or template, preferably with a light source behind it (light box, sunny window, or glass table with a lamp under it, helps to see where to trace) and gently trace.

I have a description of heat embossing in my resources (a little below my name at the left).

Great links guys, I've always wanted to try embossing too but was never sure on what it was or how to do it.
