I am wanting to start using embossing and cutting for my cards. I'm trying to decide whether to purchase the Big Shot starters kit, or the Big Shot Thinlits Card making Die Kit.
Is the machine the same in both? Can I just purchase the machine and get the other stuff as needed? And will the Thinlits dies work regardless?

    • In addition to 2 cutting pads, the machine should also include a multi-purpose platform. The platform tells you how many parts of it should be open for different types of dies. I cut wafer thin dies with the platform completely closed. I think that I have to open the top "leaf" for embossing folders. Enjoy your big shot - I've gotten a lot of use from mine! I just bought a Sizzix Big Shot and am learning how to use it.
The instruction book shows a silicon pad when using Thinlits. The silicon pad did not come with the machine. I've seen other instructions for cutting out those dies but not with the pad. • I DO NOT DO MUCH EMBOSSING BUT I LOVE MY BIG SHOT (AND I have the gemini -electronic and the cuttlebug). For embossing I believe you need 2 additional items, but not very expensive. I think less than $10 each. One is a silicone pad and the other is a texture pad, They have to be used together. I found a helpful video #129 on YouTube called something like the dos and don'ts of sizzix big shot by someone named stacy -scrapbooking made simple. I am pretty new to crafting so her video was a big help for me. Good luck and don't stress have fun, as my best friend (not a crafter) says " it is only paper!" • The differences between the two machines are the Big Shot has a 6" platform while the Big Shot Plus has a 9" platform. I have owned my big shot for years and really use it a lot! It has been really great, but lately I am having problems running my dry embossing folders through and getting a good clear image even running them through twice or changing position on the platform. It seems to me the pressure in the middle is not as firm. The outside is usually perfect and the inside is faint. Is there something I can do about it or has time and use just caused it to wear out and it's time to turn in my old machine for a new own?   By: User (05-Dec-16) Helpful Question?  Yes  |  No Thank you! • Your machine should have come with a multi-purpose platform which will allow you to cut with your thin metal dies. If you want to emboss with your thin metal dies you will need the silicone rubber mat and a texture plate (black). You might even be able to fiddle with your sandwiching and get away with just the silicone mat. If you want to emboss with embossing folders, you already have what you need. Take a look at the instructions on your multi-purpose platform. It shows what you need for each use. By: 123_Tamara (27-Jun-16) Helpful Answer?  Yes  |  No Thank you! Please know that in addition to the Big Shot Pro adapter pad, you need to add (Sandwich Recipe) the regular Big Shot Platform, Standard Cutting Pad, Embossing Folder, then another Standard Cutting Pad. • The Platform seems larger. Is it larger and if so how big is it. Using the teal one at the moment and really loving it. Would consider a second if the platform is bigger. Using it for scrapbooking and larger is better as the smaller platform means the pieces used must be cut to size.   By: eambrey (09-Apr-15) Helpful Question?  Yes  |  No Thank you! • From Sizzix: "The platform is the exact same as the older extended multipurpose platform. If they want bigger I am sure the Big Shot Plus would be a good suggestion as it is a 9” opening! "

  • I am very interested in the Big Shot. I love the Teal color as well as the sturdiness of it.
I am purchasing it at this point because I recently purchased the Papertrey Ink Planner that has the cutest dies, I was told that I could use them on this machine.
Could you tell me if that is possible and can I use all dies on it, or what are my limitations?
Thank you so much, and thanks for the sale too

The Big Shot takes just about any die. That's what sold me on the Big Shot! I hope this helps you. Have fun with your Big Shot, they help me make great cards and also with my scrapbooking. • My passion is feltwork .. can I use this machine for that porpouse.... or do you have any assitance for me.. means guide me with de right machine and rights tools for feltwork. Thanks a million   By: laruecademerlin (09-Jun-14) Helpful Question?  Yes  |  No Thank you! Report Inappropriate This question has been reported. Thank you!
This question is about a related product.
    • That depends on exactly what you want to do. Yes, this machine, and it's dies, will cut felt. And fairly well. However, it's going to cut the shapes that the dies contain - it's not going to cut freeform. This is also the larger of the Big Shot tools - if you only want to work with smaller shapes, you might be able to use a different "flavor".

So, I'd need more info on what you want to do, to give you a more complete answer. If this isn't enough info for you, please feel free to email [email protected], remind me that you're asking about the Big Shot Pro, and we can chat. :) By: Megan - ForumTech (10-Jun-14) Helpful Answer?  Yes  |  No Thank you! • Will a Sizzix machine work with Cricut supplies?   By: Chesterkitty (23-Nov-16) Helpful Question?  Yes  |  No Thank you! Report Inappropriate This question has been reported. Thank you!
    • No, the Sizzix machine is a manual die cutting machine. The Cricut is an electronic die cutting machine. The supplies for each are very different. The Sizzix machine takes only physical metal dies, where the Cricut takes only cartridges with images loaded on the cartridge. The supplies are not interchangeable.
