They can be used as a glue as well as a sealer. There is also another formula that I like to use for my altered ceramic tile coasters. Its the Outdoor formula Mod Podge. Its waterproof, so it works well to seal and protect the work done on the coasters I stamp on. Its not heat proof though but can withstand a cup of coffee/tea. It doesn't work for trivets.
