Adding Colour To Chipboard?

Ooh Marfa...love all those ideas!! I have some Tim holtz grungeboard that I've colored with markers or pressed into inkpads.

Gesso gives a nice base finish to work on, like primer when you are painting a wall. That way your colour mediums aren't affected by the brownish colour of plain chipboard.

Paints: acrylic, chalk, oil, pastels, etc

Wax crayons, color pencils, pens in assorted colors, gelly roll pens, glitter pens, markers, glitter glue, embossing powders, gesso, inks, modeling paste, Crackle Paints, Crackle Accents

I was a designer for a chipboard company so I've used all of those products and many techniques. to cover chipboard. The sky is the limit :-)

Try painting with diluted gesso or acrylic paint, then stamping on them, then sending sanding the edges once they're dry. The random-looking stamp will look as if it had been bought that way.

I usually paint mine with acrylic paint... or at least with gesso if I want to add ink, mist, spray or watercolour over top. The nude kraft chipboard absorbs too much colour and changes the way mist, etc looks on top.

I also always gently sand the surface and edges a bit. Done with fine grit sand paper (or even a brown paper bag works!) it just softens the paint and adds a bit of finish to the edges without distressing the paint much.

IDK about professional look but I paint it or glitter it then when it is dry I ink it with versa mark ink and sprinkle embossing powder over it and heat emboss it. Sometimes I just paint it and do a little stickle on it. Hint: while it is still hot and embossing powder is still melted I lay a background stamp over it. when it cools the stamp releases and it has a neat texture. Works best with solid chipboard designs.

I've come across some beautiful chipboard pieces (mainly white, frames, bird cages, fairies, items that can be one colour but would look good with several) and although I've used chipboard before I tend to use it how it comes to me as I'm really unsure on how to add colour, I've used smooch, stickles and inked the edges but I was just wondering how to get that (going to sound silly so bear with me) vintage/beautiful/profess ional look? I do not use a lot of techniques in my layouts as I've just never been able to master any correctly...any advice would be greatly appreciated as I am starting our Family Memories album once bub arrives (4 months) and I'd like to use some of the pieces I've found in the album. :-)
