Why are most scrapbooking manufacturers based on Utah?

I'm doing some research to be on a tv show and need to know why most of the scrapbooking manufacturers are based out of Utah. I know it has a lot to do with the Mormon religion, but does anyone have any other specific info as to why Utah has the most scrapbooking manufacturers, stores, etc.? Or a little history as to how the scrapbook industry grew in Utah?

I do not know any LDS members but do know that one of the aspects of their lives that they promote is their heritage. I believe one of the best libraries to research your heritage is in Salt Lake City. I suspect that's how it got started, in connection with family heritage research. Just my theory, any LDS people out there with an answer?

Interestingly; this is what I was told at the last CK convention by a vendor. I had noticed they were from Utah and commented on how many vendors were from Utah. They have a long history of scrapbooking.

Here I thought Creative Memories started it all and I drove by their headquarters in Minnesota it is huge!

I have also heard that Utah is where the scrapbooking craze began.

Thank you for the article and great info. I also posted the same question on another board plus I also phoned a Salt Lake City manufacturer and they said that it's purely coincidental that most manufacturers are LDS and from Utah. She did say that it started with 2 ladies Marielen Christensen and Brenda Birdell (Keeping Memories Alive and Pebbles Inc) and CM has also had a very large part in expanding the scrapbooking world. Thx to everyone who responded, it really helped to clear up some myths that I had and I'm glad I'm more informed. I don't want to be giving out the wrong info when I go on this tv show.

I have been very curious about this too. Companies always seem to be based in Utah, and a lot are in Ohio too. Interesting. It was good to see this question asked.

She began designing creative pages for her family's photo memories, inserting the completed pages into sheet protectors collected in 3-ring binders. By 1980, she had assembled over fifty volumes and was invited to display them at the World Conference on Records in Salt Lake City. Marielen and her husband AJ authored and published a how-to book, Keeping Memories Alive, and opened a scrapbook store in 1981 that remains open today

Well Marielen doesn't still own Keeping Memories Alive, she sold it and now it's called "Wild Ivy Memories" the website is affiliated with sb.com , it's url is http://www.scrapbooks.com I've been to the store it's pretty cool!

I have a good friend who goes to Salt Lake City every summer to visit her in-laws... she saves money all year to splurge at the many, many scrapbook store s there.

my parents are really into genealogy and family history and the LDS is a major source of info for them...they actually just got back from a trip to Salt Lake to do research. turns out the mormons are extremely focused on family and preserving family history - i think it all started from there....

I received a very good book for Christmas that I am still in the process of reading: The Scrapbook in American Life. It has a whole history of scrapbooking and tells about different historical scrapbooks. It's very interesting. We all know that scrapbooking didn't really start in Utah or by CM! I find the very early scrapbooks fascinating, and love it when I find one in an antique store. I've been scrapbooking since the 1970s, so it's a bit of an obsession with me! If you're interested, I think you can get the book at Amazon. Thank you for posting that website, Nancy - it was interesting too!
