How to store old photos cheaply?

  • Terestrife
i have a bunch of old photos. i also have a small container. I was thinking of putting them in ziploc bags or an envelope.

But how do i know if either will harm the photos?

I store mine in ziplock bags in a photo box. I e been doing it for years and it hasn't damaged them yet.

I store mine in envelopes and label the outside as to what is included and then store in photo boxes. No issues to date and it's been 20 years.

Photo boxes are pretty inexpensive when they go on sale and can fit quite a few photos. They also have dividers in most of these boxes so you don't have to take a chance using paper envelopes or ziploc bags. I'm guessing there may be some level of photo breakdown with the ziplocs but envelopes should be fine if they are acid free.

If it's just a few photos, and they are small (4x6 or less), you could get a couple of plastic photo boxes. I've bought them for around $1-$2 each. I think the 5x7 size is a bit more, maybe $3-$5.

thanks everyone. My hobby lobby had a plastic container for photos on sale. But it only fits 4x6 photos. I am not sure what to do with the bigger prints. I've been keeping the photos in yellow envelopes. Not sure if that kind of envelope can be damaging. I will be going back to hobby lobby to see what i can find.

maybe for bigger pictures use page protectors and a three ring binder. I would think big envelopes would be ok
