Is scrapbooking on the way out?

  • SAMMYANTHA16
I have been out of the scrapbooking game for some time and I've noticed that Project Life is not "trendy" anymore (which I loved because it's so easy!) and also it's harder and harder to find quality scrapbooking supplies such as journaling cards, ephemera, and washi tape. At my local Hobby Lobby and Michael's, it seems that the paper aisles and scrapbooking sections are getting smaller and smaller. It makes me wonder if scrapbooking is on it's way out or like everything else, digital is killing the paper form of scrapbooking? Thoughts?

Also, other than scrapbook.com where do you get your supplies?
  • Dawna.s Place
Speaking for myself, it's alive and well in my house! I still love scrapping layouts of my family, especially my grandchildren. Project life isn't too trendy, but I think you can still find journaling cards from Becky Higgins and Heidi Swap. Both brands are all over Amazon, lots of PL Journaling Card sets can be found there.
  • SAMMYANTHA16
I love scrapbooking! It is definitely alive and well here too but I feel like that isn't so while trying to shop for supplies. I will definitely have to look on Amazon for some thing and I browsed this website today too. It's just discouraging when you visit a craft store and you walk out empty handed because their supply is so low.
  • Dawna.s Place
Sammy so many craft supplies come from China, which is probably why the shelves are so shy right now. Hobby Lobby usually has a nice variety and good selection. At least mine does. Michael's has been a bust for a long time for me too. Honestly, amazon has a huge selection, its become a go to place to find things.
  • Dawna.s Place
Oh, there is a place, Frank Garcia Studio.com has an online store as well as his brick and mortar store. There's also, A cherry on top. Both good alternatives to sb, as they have stopped carrying so many items recently. They've probably had the same availability problems as a lot of the big box stores.
  • Dawna.s Place
BTW, since you're just getting back into the swing of things some popular brands today are 49th and Market for papers and gorgeous flowers. Mintay, Stamperia, Graphic 45, and Blue Fern Studios. All wonderful paper lines. And, Graphic 45 now makes gorgeous 3D roses.
  • Jess E
our Michael's is useless.... they have hardly any flower embellishments, the stamps and die cuts are nill, their floral buckets are nearly empty, and some other sections have big gaps. I keep saying I don't know if that store is going to make it, but maybe it really is the supply chain. Everything crafting is based around vinyl and electronic cutters anymore, it's taken over multiple isles in the craft stores and we have MIchaels, JoAnn's and HL.

  • Gluemore Girl
Not sure what to say about the big box stores but yes, I'm not as interested to go to the ones near me b/c there really isn't anything new and I don't need a lot.
I don't think scrapbooking is on it's way out, but it's not the new trend anymore. I think a lot of people tried it and loved it like many of us here and others found different paths.
I shop here and some other sites but have been scrapping so long and have so many tools after 23 of this hobby that I don't really need but want, lol.
Welcome back and I think you have a lot of options for scrapbooking supplies here and online. You just won't find them all in one place. The hunt can be part of the fun too!
  • RachelUK
I'm just as keen as I ever was (or more keen these days, to be honest!) on my scrapping, and I do my best to encourage others. I first got into scrapbooking when I was at a patchwork and quilting show and saw scrapbooking demonstrations and thought - that's for me! I keep thinking I should go to our local hobby shop in the UK (called Hobbycraft over here) and volunteer to show what scrapping is all about - it would help them to sell their goods and support a new generation of scrappers!

I use this site for shopping, and we have a few independent places in the UK which I love to support too. 'Evilbay' works well too!

I've done Project Life for about 10 years and decided to have a year off this year because I wanted to get up to date with all the grandchildren's albums (I have 8!) but I really miss it! I have plenty of goodies and hundreds of those 3x4 cards so I could easily do another year without buying more kit!
  • Scrapperb2
I don't think scrapbooking is on it's way out----I think with the pandemic, it has caused so many less activities to scrap about. I have been quite limited with what to scrap right now. I think things will change again soon
  • SAMMYANTHA16
    Thanks for the information!
  • SAMMYANTHA16
Very true. I didn't think about that. Also, like everything else, there's a supply chain issue with getting items restocked.
  • Autumngold
I think it's been on the way out for years. There used to be so many LSS in my area and now we're down to 1 which is 1/3 the size it used to be (and that was pre-covid). All the companies I used to love are gone: Basic Grey, Chatterbox, Cosmo Cricket to name a few. Even on this site if you look at the gallery at least half the LOs are digi (though it's probably more like 75%) and a large majority of the digi LOs are designers or their minions. Plus there used to be so many sites with scrapbook forums and now this is about the only site. It makes me sad because I love scrapbooking.

I agree with a lot that's been said. And as an employee of Joann's, I can say that a lot of it has been diminished. Also, they seem to carry
a lot of the same stuff over and over... and they do focus on Cricut, for sure. We have two overflowing aisles of Cricut, and some endcaps,
as well. We also have a lot of the Happy Planner stuff ... I do believe a lot of it has to do with them thinking that scrapping is on it's way out.
I hated when they got rid of all the Spellbinder dies. We now have some Hero Arts die and stamps, but nothing like it could be. I will say though,
this past week I opened a box of Tim Holtz, and I was jumping for joy. Granted it was Halloween stuff, but ohmygosh, there were dies and
stamps, stencils, and all kinds of goodies. Needless to say, I bought 4 dies and 1 embossing folder. Most of these I could use for every day
except two of the dies that were specifically for Halloween. But also in the box was small Sidekick machines! We have not sold any of the
die machines in quite awhile, so I was pleasantly surprised. You would be amazed though at how many people come in to buy paper.
This past weekend it was 70% off and it was flying off the shelves. They do sell Bazill and the thin American Crafts papers. I don't like the
really thin papers, but I have bought some on occasion when I thought they would work for a project. We do sell Vicki Boutin, Paige Evans,
and Jen Hatfield, but they sell out so quickly. I stopped by HL a couple of weeks ago and bought some dies. Michaels has nothing that I can tell.
I do know that we have some difficulty getting in stuff from China and other places. There are some things like Sculpy clay that we cannot get
and what we do have, or get in sparingly, gets stolen a lot, so those that want them and will pay for them miss out. It's a sad world we live in,
just sayin'. What I don't care about all the stores is they're making all their own stuff in their own name brand like Michaels and HL. Joann's
does too, but their paper packs are at least a little sturdier. Don't know why they stopped carrying all the good papers. Losing Basic Gray and
Scenic Route was the worst for me. They were my favorites by far. I bought what I could, and have hoarded some of it.
We have one LS store. It's a ways from me, but I try to get up there once or twice a year.
Sorry, for just babbling on, but trying to type while my granddaughter is here climbing all over me, LOL.
Anyway, just my thoughts. I hope you find stuff you can use. I don't necessarily look for papers because I have soooo much. But I am always
buying dies and stamps, and I just go online. I am into making a lot of cards these days more than scrapping. Haven't scrapped in a year,
but I'm always hoping I will get back into it. Since I retired from one job, and they put me on full time at Joann's now, but when Kaitlyn goes
back to school, I hope I can find the time to do more scrapping. LOL.

  • Jess E
there's also digital scrapbooking too... like take a look at katiepertietdesigns.com

  • Kelly.R
I think it's less popular now than it was a few years ago. On-line scrapbook stores have eliminated the local scrap shops. The pandemic has further brought things to a slow progress. Including sever wait times for new products to be delivered to on-line and box stores. I've seen a lot of people disappear from this site, which is sad. Prices have also been raised and coupons discontinued. Buying materials for this hobby isn't cheap. With people out of work and struggling to make ends meet, it's been pushed aside. I'll never give in to digital scrapbooking. Uggh! It just doesn't compare to the real thing.

I mainly scrapbook our vacations, but with Covid we haven't been anywhere in a year. We usually take 3-4 trips a year. I've been scrambling for projects to do. Spent a significant amount of time participating in the Cards for Kindness project here at SB. I wanted to give back and support this site for everything it does for us.

I went to our local Michael's and noted the sticker isle was about 90% empty. Asked an associate what happened and was advised they were clearing out the old to bring in new items. Went back 3 days later and yep, new items have been added that I've never seen before. HL gets new things in every once in a while. Their paper selection could use a major overhaul. Our J's doesn't have much. It's mostly fabric. Tuesday Morning used to be a good place to get old discontinued items, but our haven't have much since Covid started.

Places for good on-line scrapbooking items:

    A Cherry on Top
Frantic Stamper - They carry a lot of dies, but they have a good selection of collections any many that have been discontinued and out of circulation for years.
    Simon Says Stamps
    Amazon
    Etsy
Scrap Your Trip - They carry all kinds of items, not just trip related

Adding to this list - local Facebook groups. There's a few that offer swaps, "garage" type sales, etc. As soon as I get over my need to keep every single scrapping supply since the dawn of time, I'm hoping to get organized enough to start selling/give away unopened and/or gently used supplies.
  • Luv2cr8
I sadly think that scrapbooking is no longer the "it" hobby.
We had 6 LSS's and by 2017 we had none. IMO Everything in those stores was so expensive. Too expensive for me. I don't need the latest and greatest when it comes to scrapbooking supplies.
I find Simon's, Ellen Hutson's, and Gina K's supplies to be out of my budget.

I have a Cricut and have a hard time getting anything accomplished in a timely manner.
Cricut Design Space is disappointing but that could be a user error.

    I have a question:
DOES ANYONE PARTICIPATE IN MONTHLY KITS? Just curious.
If you are a kit subscriber can you tell us your experience?
  • Gluemore Girl
Yes, it's challenging for LSS's to stay in business I think. Esp when around every corner was a big box store.
I don't subscribe to kits but there are some fun ones out there. One I know is called Hip Kit Club and if you google there are others. If I were starting over again (and had few supplies) I'd subscribe. You get a variety of coordinating items which, in the long run, I think is more efficient.
  • Kelly.R
DOES ANYONE PARTICIPATE IN MONTHLY KITS? Just curious.

At one time ,I participated in the Spellbinders small die of the month club. It was OK. In the beginning they offered dies I really wanted, but then after a year I just didn't like what they were offering anymore. Than they started selling the those same dies in the store for $3 more than the club price. I decided I rather pay the additional $3 and just get what I want when I want it then get dies through the club I didn't even like. I ended up giving a lot of those dies away to scrappy friends.

That's the one thing about monthly kits. If you don't like it or don't need it your stuck with it. I rather just use the money and get what I really want.

Scrapbooking is still alive especially on line. Not sure about actual stores. They were overall too expensive. Online is still very active and busy and so many online stores... even if you pay shipping. Online classes really took over with covid... and kept scrappers in touch online for sure.... with live video chats etc

  • SBBeryl
On Youtube Lindsay Weirich the frugal crafter recently talked about this. And several other SB related forums closed. I do not have FB but there perhaps are groups there. Think with the C19 and lay offs many stop spending on all crafts.
  • Johnniesgirl22
I have thought the same about SB - during the height of C19 I did stop in the Mike's and asked the Manager. He stated that they are cutting back on SB supplies (at least for the stores in my area NC) and concentrating more on Cricut. Another loss for me because I do have the Maker but I am primarily a Silhouette gal - to me since I use the computer a lot feel it is more user friendly. Although, Cricut is pretty much layer by layer illustrated.
My local J's does keep a decent supply but not how I remember "back in the day." I buy from a local gal and will buy time to time from a great online store call www.countrycraftcreations.com owner's name is Tamra and she is extremely customer friendly, teaches you a lot and great pricing. She has a YouTube channel - started in her basement and now moved into a SheShed warehouse. When she has a sale she has a sale. Does Mystery Boxes at the end of the Seasons or a few times a year and you get over $250 - $300 of merchandise for $90. Well worth it!
I pray for the LSS's for they do get the unique items and love to support them.
Have a great day ahead everyone

  • Kathylovestoscrap
I have 3 kits per month that I subscribe to. They are all Australian - Uniquely Creative - love this as you get metals dies and everything needed for the layouts. It is expensive but so worth it. I also do an April Anne kit and a Scrapclub kit. They are all pretty and have instruictions and elelments needed for the layouts.
  • MsScrapnNap
Wish we could pay an annual fee for shipping and then not be charged shipping like how Amazon works… I'd buy a lot more often from scrapbook.com if it worked this way.
  • Luv2cr8
    I love that idea.
