ATG adhesive not rolling smoothly

So last year after some encouragement from a scrappy friend - I bought the ATG - LOVE IT!. I use the gold refills. Here is my situation.

When the roll is new - I adore the ATG -it goes on so super easy and smoothly rolls off the spool. BUT when its maybe 1/4 of the way from finished it doesn't roll off well anymore. I have to bear down really hard and it will come off in spits and spurts. When I open up the top and look inside it seems as if its sticking a bit to itself.

I got so frustrated making Father's Day cards and gift boxes that I wasted the last part of the roll and started a new one and again - the ATG was a dream.

What am I doing wrong? Or what could I do differently or do y'all have this problem too?

you're not doing anything wrong. every person I know who has the ATG (me included), says the same thing. we've all talked about it. unfortunately, I think we just have to deal with it.

but at least you're not doing anything wrong!

Well Tina that helps!! I can "deal" with the frustration if I know I'm supposed to LOL. I guess there is no PERFECT adhesive, huh?

Yep, I've had the same problem. I don't have it come off in spurts, but it is really tough to use up that last little bit of adhesive! I'm glad to know this is a problem for everyone too and that it isn't just my gun.

Tia, which ATG do you have?? I have the yellow one, not the red one and I have never had that problem?? Also, how big of a roll are you using?? When you open your roller up is your paper( the used up portion) tight and in a smooth roll?? sounds like a weird ?? but if your roll isn't tight you will get to much slack and the rollers won't work well.

I have the red 714 one and NO NO NO it is so not nicely rolled at all its a mess. The little black thingie that you put over the place where the empty roll is going has a crack in it -

so this brings 2 questions:

1. How do you make sure the paper rolls nicely
2. where can I get a replacement black thingie? I'm gonna go look at scotch's website to check that out

So I couldn't find a phone number on their website and sent them an email about it not rolling tightly and therefore the latter part of the adhesive doesn't unroll and how to get a replacement part. I'll post when (or if) I get a reply.

I think that is your problem, mine is a very tight roll, in fact I have a tad bit of trouble getting the left over paper off. the lock that you have that is cracked might be letting your left over paper slip just enough and that's why your getting stuck? Make sure when you load your gun, you put the end of the tape well into it's holder( where it takes the used up paper) and the paper is tight no slack. If you are getting slack or if it gets way to tight and it can't roll then the gear isn't moving right making it skip?? Just my thought, hope you get it worked out I LOVE my ATG and have never had a problem but mine is the 700 and that might be the difference??

my trigger sticks...so i just keep triggering it until it releaaes, but mine also gets all touchy at the end!

I had trouble with my 714 (red) gun and contaced 3M about it. They replaced a gear in it the first time about a year ago. I contacted them 2 weeks ago about purchasing another gear because it was doing the same thing. They said that they had a batch about 2 years ago with bad gears that caused problems. Some of them to the extent that the bad gear damaged other parts of the gun. I sent my whole gun back in and they are sending me a new one. I should be getting it this week. I would suggest contacting the company where you originally purchased the gun and talking to them. They should have the contact information for you to call 3M and talk to them. They can determine if you are eligible for the new gear.

I've not had a problem so far, but I'm not even half way through my first roll. I'll keep an eye out on it. I also have the 714.

Did you all see the PINK ATG that is coming out? It is supposed to be the same as the 714. Too bad I just bought the red one!

I have the red one. can't remember what size, I thinkt he smaller one. some of my friends went in on a group buy, but others bought it separately, and we all seem to have the same problem. I can't imagine that we all got them from the bad batch?

i find at the end the roll is very hard to use too. When it gets to that point. i take off the "used" part of the roll and leave some to wrap around like it was a new roll, except i make sure i can wrap the used part around at least 3 times to help keep it on. sometimes it help sometimes it doesn't.

I just finished my first roll of adhesive from the tapedepot, and didn't have any problems at all.

I just pre-ordered one for me and my mother. The price is much cheaper because it is not industrail quality, it is made for home crafting use. It is the same size as the ATG714.

I have the same issue, only I never really NOTICE it until I stick in the new roll,,,,,,,and it rolls so smoothly I think "hey, the last roll was harder",,,,and then I remember I said the same thing when I put THAT one in,,,,

It just feels like there is more resistance to me, Andrea,,,,,but you're right, it does happen,,,,

I have the red one (the 714) and have had it about 5 years now. I love it, and it does not stick at all. I have used about 120 rolls of adhesive in it and no issues (Except when I forgot the black thingy and it got to be a bit of a mess).

moonpuff that confirms my "theory" that its the cracked black thingie - ya - Holly I too love my technical terms !

Just started using the 714 and I notice the tape rolls over the far edge of the orange rubber wheel, you know, the wheel that you place on the paper. Looks like it is going to slide off. Am I doing something wrong?

Also, do they make a repositional(sp) tape? I really like this dispenser, but I can't reposition without tearing and destruction.

I've had mine kinda slip over the edge a time or two and I just loosen the roll a bit and move it back and have no further trouble.
