Based on what I am imagining, why not use something with a white, or light colored backgound, that has little red polka dots or tiny hearts or something.
The gingham is what I consider to be a "busy" print. Anything too strong or busy in the background is going to be way too much. You definately want some color back there, but keep it simple, and I think you'll be pleased with the results.
You might take your gingham paper to your local scrapbook store and look for something that coordinates with it. Just remember, simple.
