I cannot get over this bottle cap stuff...NEVER thought of smashing them up! I can't wait for this day to be over so I can go home and do some damage! I have the perfect picture of my grandfather with an Iron City Beer in his hand in a field. What a perfect embellishment.
It just so happens that I've been saving bottle caps for a rainy day (I hear they're calling for rain tonight in Pittsburgh, PA)
What fantastic ideas! Those ones with stamps inside them and filled with laquer would work great for a TRAVEL page, LOVE LETTER page, USA page, "Home Sweet Home" page...Oh my...my imagination is really going now...come on 5:00pm! (Hey, it's 5:00 somewhere!)

Has anyone tried to flatten out the ones like from beer bottles or wine coolers..I can't get them to flatten out like the boughten ones..they look funny!!!

Ok, I got this tip from another lady on the board.

You need a Sizzix and convertor. Place a thin piece of cardstock between the mat and cap and a thin piee of tape on top of the cap. If you do not do this, it will stick to the mat and scratch the convertor.

I don't have a sizzix so I haven't tried this yet.

Jolene, I havent tried used ones, but I have read they will not flatten correctly because they were already crimped. I was going to try to make a charm bracelet from them though so Couldnt need to flatten.

Lisa, Flip it around. The bottlecap should be so that the top is up and place a piece of fabric, there is not much space for much more. The open part will scratch your matt a little, but so does using it to die cut!

I did over 200 of them at an expo make and take.

Ok, I thought I posted this once before; but I must not of because I can't find it.....but if I did and this is a dup post I'm sorry.

Any way I am starting to get in the swing of things after almost of year of not scrapbooking due to various reasons. One thing that I saw and thought that I might like to use are bottle caps. I was hoping someone could let me know how it worked out for you over all and how you adhered them to the page. I am kind of leary of using them but like the over all idea of them.

I'm actually teaching a bottle cap class on Tuesday night! I've been happier with the bottle caps for jewelry personally. I will try to upload some class samples on Monday. I've used them on pages to make catepillars and flowers and butterflies. In jewelry, my favorite is making people with wire and beads as arms/ legs.

Biggest hint for flattening I found right in this forum!! Using my Sizzix and the converter. I added a piece of fabric to reduce scratching on the cap surface.

I use foam adhesive squares to attach mine. The ones I used I didn't flatten, I just use the full height, so I just stacked the adhesive until it was tall enough. I put it in the squares in the cap and then flipped it over to put it on the page.

If you flatten, it won't take as many squares. Also, you can attach them with the top on the page and put a pict, embelly, etc. inside the cap. Then, you can just attach with a good adhesive.

Huh.....I actually never thought to flatten them out. The store where I saw them used them 'as-is'. I like the ideas that I am getting here.

When I try and flatten bottle caps with my hammer or rubber mallet, they never flatten properly. The center always dents and the edges don't flatten out. I have tried flattening then upside down, rightside up, and with a mouse pad under it.

Does anyone have any tips to get it to flatten properly???

This lady here uses them upside down - she puts a picture in it and fills it with resin. I don't know if she smushes them or not. Maybe it will give you an idea

the best way I have found to flatten mine is to put them under the leg of the kitchen table and then lean on the table- it comes out nice and even unlike using a hammer- you need a leg at least as wide as the cap) That was how i did the ones on the cover of the paper bag album in my gallery. also, my cousin put one under her heal and stepped on it- worked just the same as the table It didn't work for me though

Thanks for the tip.....I kept trying to flatten mine and they got all crooked....this worked great!!!!!

I actually perfer my bottle caps to look all banged up... gives it an "older antiquy" look!!

I've never tried it, but I imagine if you put a piece of wood or something hard overtop of the bottle caps when you hammer them they would flatten smoother because you wouldn't be hitting the hammer directly on the bottle cap. The weight of the impact would be more evenly distributed through the wood.

If you don't have a Sizzix, you can also set a cutting board or a hunk of wood on top of the bottle cap and whack the of wood. It will flatten them out evenly too...

where can you get bottle caps that aren't from wine or beer so they flatten properly? (without having to pay an arm and leg at an LSS?)

wow, this is one of the most informative threads I have read. I received some bottle caps in an envie swap or the ester egg swap...can't remember and I have been wondering what the heck I do with them....can't wait to try some of these ideas.

one questions....when you flatten the bottle cap on your floor and table...does it leave indentions anywhere? We just moved in to a new home so I have brand new floor and brand new kitchen table. I dont want to ruin them. Now I know no one would see the indentions on my table legs...but im nervous!

Here's a tip I heard -haven't tried it yet, and my back is too poor to lift the kitchen table (LOL). It was suggested on another MB to put a piece of 2x4 over your bottle cap before hitting with a mallet to flatten it out. Understand this keeps them nice and uniform. I have yet to use mine...
