Question about using Adhesives

I just read in the recent issues of MM magazine I received yesterday about getting started with sb. It mentioned knowing when to use adhesives for the right situation. I'm wondering if I am using my different adhesives with the right stuff. Is there anything that sort of explains when to use the squares, glue sticks, roll-on, liquids, etc?, and on what type of products, like cardstock versus photos, versus other stuff you put on a LO?

There's really no right or wrong...it depends on what look you want. The squares and pop dots and stuff create a 3d look. Liquid glues don't work well with paper because they dry funky but I use glue sticks for just about everything. There is a super strong one that even holds metal. A lot of people like to use hermafix and stuff like that (those roller things that place tiny glue dots on paper) but I use it a lot and run out really fast.
As far as photos just make sure it's acid free. There is a photo glue stick that I use--I like it because I can easily remove and restick if it's in the wrong place. Some plain glue sticks don't do that so well.

So other than not using the liquid glue on cardstock - like the Tombo Mono glue, it really doesn't matter, as long as I like it and it works! If anyone else has any general rules of thumb to help make these kinds of adhesive decisions, weigh in!

Everyone will have a different opinion.

I use glue sticks only for paper to paper adhesion. The bond becomes brittle after a period of time with photographs and they fall off the page. I learned this the hard way in my first books almost ten years ago.

I use acid-free, dry adhesive for photographs, such as tabs and dots and lines, to prevent warping and to create a permanent lasting bond. (Most of the ones I like are runner styles, but it doesn't matter.) I found certain types of double-sided tape do not hold up well in the long run, especially with heavy Polaroid photographs. Those are at the bottom of my page protectors in Our Wedding Planning Memoirs album right now. Sigh. We were married in June 1999 and I did that book in early 2000.

I love Tombo Mono liquid and use it for small items. You only use a tiny drop and that little tip is awesome, especially for tiny letters or other tiny embellishments. Liquids are also the best way to use glitter. I used to do liquid, and then apply glitter. Too much hassle and mess, so now I just use a glitter glue. Tons on the market and my favorite is Stickles by Ranger, but I also use the generic brand in the kids crafts at Wal-Mart. LOL

There are "official" guides around. I believe there is one on this site, in fact. Pehaps a google search will turn up something useful. I found something on an archival site once for the best ways to maintain photographs for historical purposes. I forget the name of the site now, though. My point, though, is it depends on your purpose. If you are scrapbooking for generations to come, then it is a lot more important than if you are doing a mini album for grandma's purse. KWIM?

I hate liquids. For paper especially. I used liquid with my spiral bound albums and all the pages are warped.

The Hermafix things are great, but I find that the tip gets gunked up and it doesnt work right afterwards. I have spent so much money trying to get those things to work.

So now I use Glue Lines for *everything*. Almost. I can pull off a line and fold it in half lengthwise or crosswise to use on photo corners and stuff. It really keeps everything in place which is why you have to be 100% sure of where your placing your item. Especially on paper cause it'll rip it, which is fine if where your moving it will cover the rip...but you get my point.

The Mini Glue Dots and the regular ones are great too.

I use my hermafix for just about everything paper, except when I use my xyron for small or weird shapes and for ribbons, vellum, clear things. I use mini glue dots for heavier things like metals and other small embellishments. Also have tried a liquid for fibers, but really don't like liquids. Sugguest you just try things and decide what works best for you.
