Labeling Photos?

Im starting to print and sort a whole bunch of photos, but I need to label them in the photo boxes. What do you use to write on the back?

I thought about post it notes, but those might sit with the photos for years. (Maybe not so great?) The containers are slightly bigger than 4 x 6, so dividers probably wont work either.

Are there special markers? I just want to write date, place, and the page Im planning to use it on.

There are some photo safe markers out there and CM used to sell pencils for this purpose but not sure if they still do.
I would imagine any type of marker you purchase for scrapbooking AND dries completely might be okay. I have all kinds of ball point pen/ink on the back of my childhood photos and they've survived thus far, lol.

Thanks! I tried all the markers I have on a duplicate photo, and every last one smudges lol. I couldn't find the CM pencil, so I ordered a permanent Staedleter marker. I believe it said acid-free on it, so hopefully that works. At least it says "quick-dry".

All the photos from my grandparents have ballpoint pen on the back, and they're fine too lol. The ones my parents labelled, you can see the pen. I guess they pressed too hard. (My grandpa loved photography, so he labelled most things for my parents when he'd visit.)

Oh good, glad you found something. At one time there were "Slick writers" and I had a whole set. You could write on the photo itself with no smudge. I haven't seen them in years and mine all dried out as my DD used them a lot too.

Hello Everyone, I also have pulled out many photos of when we were kids. The pictures are all black and white and most all have a date and year printed on the back of them. My Mom did a wonderful job documenting our lives, but unfortunately when she passed my siblings took them apart for photos of themselves. Last summer I tried to scrap them onto black cardstock just like the albums they came from. I have white ink pens for journaling. The task is overwhelming and didn't realize how big of a project it really is. I have no system for sorting them only by the year taken. I think I am over thinking how to do this, I don't know.
Anybody else having the same problem?
