Traveling Michigan Journaling Reads: Brownwood Acres In the 1920s the Brown family moved from Chicago to a cottage on Torch Lake in Northern Michigan. After a few cold winters on the water, they purchased the farm connected to their property and moved inland. The area soon became known as Brownwood Acres. In the 1940s their daughter, Mary Louise and her family, who were living in Chicago, decided to join her parents at Brownwood Acres. Soon her children began selling honey from the familys roadside stand. They did so well that in 1945 the family built a small market called the Honey House to sell the honey and homemade preserves. In 1950 it needed expanding so Mary Louise decided to rescue the 1875 Grass Lake Log School House and move it to Brownwood Acres. The business continued to flourish and in 1957 Mary Louise purchased the 1866 Eastport Inn and also had it moved to Brownwood Acres. It was moved across the lake during the winter and almost stayed there after the ice broke! But they were able to save it and once on Brownwood Acres became The Brownwood Country Store. As the store continued to evolve, a restaurant and shelves for candy were added. It is still operated by the family today and is a favorite Northern Michigan destination. We went there while visiting the Donnellys grandma in August 2009 and of course bought lots of candy!
